If you’re applying for a job there’s generally multiple qualifications in a bulleted format. For example if there’s four qualifications, and one of them requires a license or certification that’s generally not the one where the “transferable skills” rule applies. Look for the people management, administrative experience, or things like that. Move on to the one that says must have “great people skills” or “excellent written and verbal communication required” since those are subjective. Software engineering is not transferable to a job as a CT tech, just as a CT Tech can’t write lines of code.

Kevin Greene, this is one of those nuggets that people need to hear event though it really should be common sense. I wonder how many people read this and went, "WOW". Great reminder for some, great information for everyone else.
That is definitely not where transferable skills can come into play!

4moThis is also why it's incumbent on the recruiter to confirm the must-haves in their initial meeting with the hiring manager. I met with a COO once who was to hire a transactions attorney. The job description he sent me made no mention of a law degree and active bar membership.
