Retiring with Zero (To Prove) This year marks a significant milestone, as over 4 million people are set to turn 65, making it the largest cohort to reach the traditional retirement age in a single year. In the coming months, the impact of this demographic shift on the economy, social security, inheritance, and the family unit will become increasingly visible. And while this unfolds, it's clear that the concept of retirement is undergoing a profound change. No longer viewed as the end of one's career, retirement can also be a new opportunity for growth and contribution. What adds value to your life? How has that changed over time? Astonishingly, 71% of Americans aged 65 or older believe their best times are not behind them but are happening now — or are yet to come. Moreover, 83% prioritize feeling "useful" over feeling "youthful," finding that continuing work offers them a sense of purpose and vitality. Read more in the Harvard Business Review article and others below. The future is certainly wide open! Let’s prepare you for it. Be Productive in Retirement! I always say that "busy people are not productive, effective people are not too busy". Squeezing several commitments in one day is always a challenge. I had one of those days this weekend – had a project review and site visit, rendered a lecture to an MBA class and attended an Alumi function. I can mark this one as one of those effective and productive weekends for me. As a retired person, who still wants to be professionally engaged while enjoying the liberties of retirement, it was important that: 1. At the outset I determined and planned what business, social, civic and outreaches I will be engaged in, and how much time I was willing to put into them. 2. I established regular schedule of engagements and marked them on my calendar ahead of time: projects, lectures, outreaches, consulting and family activities. 3. If the commitments happen to be unavoidably bunched together in a day, prepare for them in advance. I put together the lecture I delivered this weekend last week, then I flexed my project review earlier than normal so that I have time to nap and get energized for a long alumni evening. 4. I set up routine for social and sports activities. I golf with two sets of golf buddies in two clubs. The dates are sacrosanct. I look forward to them. 5. Things can get awry sometimes and mess up my calendar. They happen. I learned not to get uptight. There will always be another day. #retirement #leadership #lessonsilearned

Have you ever been on the Fast Lane on the road only to find that you can't move ahead because of a vehicle in front of you, immediate or even a few vehicles in front are blocking your journey or slowing you down towards your destination? (Let not pull in the speed limit story.. we are all law abiders here). So what do you do? You have to flash some lights politely. Or... you just had to take the inner lane or slower lane to over take. The same applies in your career or business. Sometimes you just had to take a different lane even if it seems like a slower lane to make to the destination that we want. This is what I am doing. I have become an Entrepreneur in Training & Coaching in the Health Education industry (from a senior management in an Oil & Gas MNC). I have switched lane to what may seems to be a slower lane now but I can see clearly where this lane is taking me towards my destination. Towards the future that I want. At a pace that I want, that there shall be no slower vehicles in front of me blocking me or slowing me down. I have switched lane so that I don't have to work to look forward to retirement. It is sad that many are working so hard in hope for a retirement. I have switched lane to where my personal development is my own responsibility & provocative. I have switched lane where my promotion & bonus are my decision & my own hard work. I don't have to wait for the Boss or Board to approve based on their appraisal or budget. I have switched lane where I increase my income every day, every week, every month. I dont have to wait for the annual increment, if any. I have switched lane where I choose to do what I am passionate about that I enjoy doing all the time. Because to me it is not a job. Hence I don't need to apply for leave or wait for public holidays. I have switched lane where I can see my future. The future that I want. The future where I achieve my #7FsLifeGoals. Where I know my income don't halt at "retirement". Whatever that you are working on right now, what happens when you retire? Will your income stop? Will your standard of living lowers? Will you have enough to retire? #magikcal #7FsLifeGoals #rxsportsprogramme #entrepreneurship #lifestylecoach #jessiegchan

Aim for a life filled with accomplishing your goals, not just a retirement. I took this picture of the 12 Apostles on the Great Ocean Road during a road trip in Australia in 2016. Travel is a big part of my life and I have been to 34 countries thus far. This picture came up in a photo memory a few days ago, it's nice to be reminded of travels in years past. As I looked at this photo, I had a moment where it was clear in my mind 'retirement' and 'goals' aren't the same thing. I'm revising the word 'retirement' in my vocabulary and embracing 'financial freedom' and 'goals' instead. 'Retirement' can sound like living in a tiny apartment, playing cards by day, and lounging on the couch by night, not accomplishing anything. Financial freedom is about the joy of doing what you want, whenever you want. Put simply, accomplishing your goals. For many, the golden years might mean traveling, exploring the world, spending more time with family, or diving into hobbies. I know my goal is to travel more. Let's shift our focus. It's not about retiring, it's about living a life full of choices, goals, and happiness. P.S. What are your goals for life after work?

Reaching the pinnacle of your career can be a bittersweet moment. After years of hard work and dedication, you've finally achieved the coveted position of Director, Manager, Chief Executive etc a far cry from your humble beginnings as a junior professional. But as you sit in your corner office, gazing out at the city skyline, a nagging question lingers in the back of your mind: "What's next?" The traditional path would be to coast along until the official retirement age of 60, basking in the glory of your accomplishments and enjoying the perks that come with your position. But is that truly enough to keep you fulfilled and engaged for the next decade or more? The idea of a comfortable retirement in your beautiful home, surrounded by your cows, goats, and poultry, might seem like a dream come true. But deep down, you can't shake the feeling that there's more to life than simply waiting for the next chapter to begin. Do you yearn for something more, a way to redefine your purpose and make the most of your skills and experience? As you ponder these questions, it's clear that there's no one-size-fits-all answer. Starting to consider life beyond full time work? Full or partial retirement / revivement / rewirement? If so then this book "Rethinking retirement for positive ageing - Creating a meaningful life after full-time work" by Dr Denise Taylor which I've just finished reading, could be ideal for you. I'm preparing to deliver a pre-retirement workshop in coming days and had noticed that this is one of the latest books published on the topic. What I really liked about it: + the small, handbag sized book is a well balanced mix of very practical activities, highlighted in separate boxes throughout the text, supported by academically research backed facts as well as personal experiences from Denise's own life and her clients. Do buy a new journal to accompany you on this journey, as there are plenty of reflective questions posed. Also consider buddying up with someone else exploring this next chapter of life and share your insights together + there is plenty of practical content here, sharing ideas about new work directions, volunteering, financial well-being, your health and well-being but this book goes beyond and explores deeply the psychological aspects of this very significant life transition. The book encourages you to think about who you are NOW and the NEW you going forwards. What does a successful next stage of life look like to you? What is going to be important to you? What will feel meaningful? Please share in the comments below your thoughts about that word "retirement". Are there alternative formulations (such as revivement which Denise mentions, or rewirement) that capture more positively this phase of life? As professionals, we dedicate countless hours to our careers, pouring our hearts and souls into our work. But as retirement approaches, many of us find ourselves facing a daunting question: What comes next? It's a question that can evoke fear and uncertainty, particularly for those whose identities have become intertwined with their professions. I've witnessed firsthand the apprehension that often accompanies the prospect of retirement. For many, the idea of stepping away from their careers can feel like losing a part of themselves. Our work becomes more than just a means of income; it shapes our daily routines, our relationships, and even our sense of purpose. Retirement is the golden years. But are they? Looking ahead, I don’t want to retire completely. I would like to slow down but not stop. I’ve seen people flourish after retiring & others lose their drive all together. What would I do every day if I didn’t have my marketing, networking, learning. Coaching, interactions? As I build my consulting, I do have the future – near & far on the top of my mind. On the same hand, why should I wait until retirement to live out my golden years. I want to experience those vibes & peace of mind now. I’m taking each day as a special gem & making the most of my life. Tomorrow may never come, so don’t wait. These are my golden years. -------------------------- Hi, I’m Jen Byron. 💠 I’m a marketing consultant. 💠 I specialize in empowering female & veteran owners, solopreneurs & small businesses learn the magic of marketing to grow their business through coaching or strategic planning. 💠 I create custom solutions for each client to fit their business performance goals & budgets. ➡ Interested in working together or networking, visit my Jen B Marketing page to schedule a meet up. #retirement #livefortoday #marketingandadvertising

𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 Imagine never having to retire, because your work is your passion and your contribution is growing ever more valuable. Does it sound like a dream? It's more attainable than you think. Most people view work mainly as a means to the end of financial security. Because that’s how we’ve been taught to see it. But what if, for you, work is about contributing to society’s advancement? And if finding work that feels like play can be the secret to a longer, more fulfilling life? The truth is, when you love what you do – when your work ignites your spirit and leads you to jump out of bed every morning with enthusiasm – it simply doesn't feel like work. It becomes a part of who you are, allowing you to contribute, grow, and make an impact—all while enjoying every minute of it. This message isn't about avoiding retirement; it's about reimagining it. It's about creating a life where you don't need to escape from what you do, but rather, find a way to do it for as long as possible. So, how do you find this magical intersection of passion and work, if you’re not experiencing it? Start by asking yourself what brings you joy, what activities make time fly by, and where your skills meet your interests. Then, take the first brave step toward rebuilding your career around it. The path might not be easy, but the reward – a lifetime of fulfillment and never having to 'retire' in the traditional sense – is unparalleled. Ready to redefine retirement for yourself? Share your thoughts or tag someone who needs to hear this. Let's inspire each other to find work that feels like play. ~~ 𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘧𝘶𝘭, 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘵.
