How do you handle your book of business as a freight broker? How I handle my book of business. 1.Integrity- be up front with your driver's and your customers. Your customer should know all updates right away. Lying in this industry only digs you in a deeper hole. 2.Work ethic - This means you don't stop working until all of your customers are satisfied. if that means 06:00 to 22:00 so be it. 3.Communication - All customers should have a tracking link sent to them for all of their shipments no matter what. Updates still need to be given to your customer. Establish with your customers how often they would like updates and how they want to receive those updates. 4.Operational knowledge- Perfect example yesterday - my POC didn't know what a flatbed hotshot was. How did I handle the situation?- I explained to her the length of a flatbed hotshot, how it would be strapped down, also mentioned that flatbed hotshots are not dock height and asked if that's okay. After I got off the phone with her I sent multiple pictures of a tarped flatbed hotshot. I made sure there was a full understanding of what equipment their product would be delivering in. Simply over service your customers. I know other things go into being a great broker. In my opinion those are some qualities that you must have to have success in this industry.

Business is a competitive landscape in any industry you decide to begin a business in. You compete against other companies that are looking to provide the same service/product as you do, and get paid for it. Starting a trucking company isn’t any different. The asset itself doesn’t separate you much from your competitor. Your business model and strategy does. As a trucking company owner, you MUST differentiate yourself from your competitors, who are other trucking company owners. It can be by way of location, commodity, tailgate service, multi stop, the list goes on. Many owners start trucking companies and leave the business behind. This will get you left behind.

I see freight agents losing control of their businesses every day. It's alarming. Why? Because “Big Brother” is always watching… It's your brokerage! Saying you can't work from home...
