TGIF, everyone! Coretta Scott King once said, "It doesn’t matter how strong your opinions are. If you don’t use your power for positive change, you are indeed part of the problem." Having a voice is important, but taking action is what really creates change. One powerful way to make your voice heard is by voting. Your vote has the power to shape your community and the future. As we head into the weekend, consider this: Are you registered to vote? If not, remember that October 15 is the last day to register in Maryland. Let’s all do our part to be part of the solution! #FoodForThought #YourVoteMatters #FridayMotivation #GetOutTheVote #communityaction #helpingpeoplechanginglives #VoterRegistration

#NationalNightOut, held the first Tuesday in October, will be here before you know it! Start planning now for a fun night of getting to know your neighbors and neighborhood police officers (NPOs)—a fundamental building block of reducing crime. Hosting a great #NNO event doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Here are some ideas to keep it simple and share the costs. - Email or hand-deliver homemade invitations to every neighbor on your block. Get the kids to help! - Host a front yard dessert potluck: ask everyone to bring a lawn chair and a treat to share. - Ask neighbors to turn on their lights and come outside for a walk after dinner. - Say hello, introduce yourself, help new neighbors meet each other and share contact information. Once you decide, please register your event with the Fort Worth Police Department: https://lnkd.in/g8h77Zqt You’ll be recognized for your efforts, we’ll provide some goodies for you to hand out while supplies last, and we’ll do our best to stop by on Oct. 1. #NNOFW

On WORT 88.9 A Public Affair, we talked about: 1. Missed warning signs to prevent the attack before a 14-year-old student brought a gun to school in Wisconsin. 2. Many of the highest casualty school shootings happen in small communities where “it could never happen here”. 3. Confusion with messaging, delays in reunification, and prolonged lockdowns with students being separated from their siblings and families. 4. Lack of standardized system to report red flags.

Anyone focused on school safety should follow David Riedman. His data and analysis are so valuable for understanding - and preventing - school shootings. I've gotten considerably smarter since following him. (Thank you, David!) Mount Horeb is another sad story in a too-long string of sad stories (and it could have been so much worse...). As David points out, nearly every school shooter leaves signs/cries for help before they act. We just keep missing them. I have to think a solution like Lightspeed Systems Alert could have prevented this. Alert AI could have picked up the searches about Columbine, the social media comments about school violence, the google site posts about his school shooting obsession and suicidality (or views of those posts by other students!). Tip Line could have been a safe way for students to report it. Our Human Review would have called the district immediately and helped them tie all the incidents together. SROs, cameras, metal detectors, active shooter protocols - all these things are important. But they're fallible, they're last line of defense. We have to get better at spotting the signs and acting proactively, long before the gun ends up on campus.
