Play-Based Music Education Specialist | Helping Teachers & Schools Run Successful Music Programs | Director at Tāla Education
Dear Hiring Team, Stop doing this! 🛑 ❌ Using 'Music Grades' as the main qualification is flawed. ❌ Grades show playing capability, not teaching ability. ❌ Ready-made music teachers for school settings are non-existent. ❌ Colleges in India lack decent music education majors. Below is a job post from one of Bangalore's leading schools, highlighting the common practice of valuing grades as the default benchmark! Since there are no proper qualifications, here's how you hire: ✅ Screen candidates thoroughly based on experience. ✅ Ask for a demo class. ✅ Assess teaching, class management, and basic pedagogical skills. Once you make a hire: ✅ Pair them with a seasoned buddy. ✅ Schedule class observations with experienced teachers. ✅ Invest in regular professional development in Music Pedagogy Music grades apply to specialist roles like guitar, piano, voice, and so on, not for Kindergarten! They need other skills to teach kids aged 2 to 7! Regular professional development is the only way to train the current workforce. If you need help for your teachers, Tāla Education provides the skills, resources, and support music teachers need, to teach in a school. Agreed, The only way forward should be teachers who are music education majors, if it is classroom teaching but again that can be a stretch due to the limited numbers of teachers who get a degree in music and also because most schools only want teachers to cater to their annual programs and don't really want to focus on music as a subject.
Ask for a demo class. ✅
Well said…sometimes there are teachers having the best of qualifications, are great performers, but just can’t teach.
This is 0n point.Approved✅
Really appreciate your point of view Kevin Wilson. Hope Schools really understand this.

3mo"Teachers teach the way they are taught or, you must intentionally teach differently, if you had a bad teacher". Most teachers with only music grades as qualifications end up teaching 3 to 7 year olds to trace the treble clef, write quarter notes and may do some "action songs". Pedagogy and all may be gradually discovered along the way and in the meantime children experience feel good songs and random activities off the net with no structure.
