“Till death do us part” does not apply to employment! As a recruiter, candidates ask me this question, “What is a red flag on a resume?” My typical response is, “time at companies and unexplained gaps.” A good recruiter will ask tough questions about job frequency and if the explanation is reasonable, will share this information with the hiring manager to clarify and qualify you. People are not perfect, life happens. “Job hopping” varies from company to company and by industry. When recruiting for IT and manufacturing positions, it was typical for candidates to show quicker turnarounds (1-3 years). A skill can be mastered in that time and individuals move on for more money. I get it. Recruiting in the civil engineering industry is one of the exceptions, we look for more longevity. Nothing says you have to stay in this position for life. Mastery of a skill is important, repetition and continuity are a requirement, after all, lives could be at stake (think bridges, water, environment, roads, airports)! I caution individuals working in this industry to be selective in their moves and do your research on your “next” company. Make sure that the company meets all your criteria before signing on. You are not married to your job, so to all my civil engineers thinking about new opportunities, have I got the company for you! www.hoyletanner.com. #HoyleTanner #CivilEngineering #ResumeTip

October brings in a different climate here in New England. The humidity is gone, hot temperatures cool down, and everyone becomes energized by this change. Hoyle Tanner has a refreshing process when interviewing our candidates. Our Human Resources and Talent Acquisition department prescreens and qualifies our candidates, prior to setting up the second interview, so the ‘technical’ side of the candidate is already known to the interviewing team. (This is common in most companies.) The second interview shifts the energy for the candidate as an open and honest dialogue about their career objectives and explaining how they see themselves as a leader of their vision. Hoyle Tanner values their employees to deliver the right solutions and gives them the support to do so. If you are a civil engineer in need of a change in work climate to reenergize yourself, check out our offerings on our Career Page. #HoyleTanner #CivilEngineeringJobs #TransportationEngineers #CivilEngineers #WastewaterEngineers #DrinkingWaterEngineers #BridgeEngineers #ResidentEngineers #AirportEngineers #SurveyingJobs #CADRevit #LifesTooShort

Testimonial Time! Here is a review I received from a structural engineer who relocated from the west coast to be with family and moved reluctantly as they loved their previous company. The challenge was to find him a company he loved just as much as his current one but on the opposite side of the country! Naturally, walking away from a company you love is a hard thing to do and I immediately outlined all the things that made his company so great so that I could focus on ticking as many of those boxes as possible in his next opportunity. Once we were clear on what we were looking for, I got straight to work on speaking with companies who aligned with him and wasted no time on opportunities that didn't tick these boxes. I immediately called my client who I felt aligned the most with his long-term goals and personality traits and they happened to be just 30 minutes away from him. After a short discussion about his situation, the hiring manager and I agreed that it aligned really well and set up a call for the following day. Two weeks and two interviews later, he was offered the job which gave him a 20k salary increase, step up in seniority, hybrid schedule, but most importantly he REALLY liked the people so there was no question about moving forward. He has now completed his first 2 weeks and after catching up with him this week, it is clear that he made the right choice. Would you like to confidentially discuss which companies in your area align with your personal goals? Last week we asked you how you view your job security 6 months ago vs now. The results are in and it’s an interesting one! 42% of my audience said that their job security has stayed the same now vs 6 months ago, however the more interesting stat is that 39% of you said that you feel less job security. Personally we are seeing less job security within the transport infrastructure space, but seeing a lot of hiring activity elsewhere; specifically in structural engineering and on the civil side, land and urban development. We’ve taken on multiple roles in these sectors this week alone, so if you have experience working for an Australian engineering design consultancy then please get in touch – these companies are all busy and offer long-term job security. There’s many factors as to why people feel less secure at the minute but I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below on what you think could be contributing to the feeling of lower job security! ⬇️ #engineering #jobsecurity #buildingtalentrecruitment

In our current economic climate and with the complexity of EPC Contracts, this is quote reminds you of what it used to be like....shake hands and become partners in a project.
Building the future of Civil Construction & Engineering -- Your partner in finding your next career move and building high-performance teams
“I was promised a promotion 6 months ago, but it still hasn’t happened.” As recruiters, we hear this all too often when speaking with talent in the market. When you first hear them, promises may sound reassuring; but promises don't secure promotions… and ambiguous expressions certainly aren’t a binding contract. Unless these words transform into a concrete plan with set timelines, its simply just that… words. If you’re an Engineer, Project Manager, Superintendent or Estimator in the civil space and this sounds familiar – PLEASE drop me a line via LinkedIn or email at lindsay.lambert@adecco.ca today. I’ve helped hundreds of folks like you successfully reach their full potential with an employer who saw their value immediately. #adecco #constructionjobs #engineeringjobs #yourjourneyyourrules #ontariojobs #civil
