However, it's crucial to steer clear of an error aspiring and emerging speakers often fall into.   It is building your speaking muscle in front of your immediate circle instead of the intended audience. It's natural to start within a comfort zone — amongst colleagues and networks who are supportive and welcoming. This provides a great practice ground. Yet, the true measure of growth and the key to making a significant impact with your speaking lies in your ability to transition from engaging with familiar faces to captivating the audience that stands to benefit from your expertise.   Regularly check in: Are you predominantly engaging with your professional circles and networks? Or are you strategically positioning yourself in front of the audience that needs to hear your message?   Because the first will make you feel good – but the second will change your world.

To craft a compelling speaker bio for starting in public speaking, focus on: 1) Showcase Expertise: Highlight your personality, core areas of expertise, credentials, and reputation. Align your bio with the event's theme and audience expectations to demonstrate your value. 2) Enhance Event Reputation: Your bio should present you as a knowledgeable and skilled speaker who adds value to the event, potentially attracting more attendees. 3) Build Trust and Rapport: Familiarity and trust are crucial for securing speaking opportunities. Event hosts prefer speakers they can rely on. Remember, success in speaking gigs is a combination of talent (33%), rapport (33%), credentials (33%), and luck (1%).

When I started as a public speaking coach, I had to challenge myself as a speaker. I remember organizing many public speaking events. I would list the events on Eventbrite and Meetup… And back then, a bunch of people would sign up! However, I had a problem. No one would sign up for my services… Even though people said, they loved the workshop and got a TON of value from it. My problem was that I didn’t know how to persuade people to move to the next step. So, I learned everything I could about it through books, videos, and more. I would learn and do. And I repeated it over and over again. I had to challenge myself as a speaker. Now, I’m happy to say that I’ve gotten so much better. Of course, I’m still a work in progress. What about you?
