Can we measure the feeling of presence in #VR using #BCI? 🤔 I'm excited to share that my first paper has been published in the Journal of Neural Engineering! 🎉 In this study, we used an oddball paradigm to measure participants' attention to the real world while being immersed in a virtual environment. Our findings show that presence affects this attention, and we can effectively measure it through brain activity! Innovative Research on VR and Brain Navigation! A groundbreaking study by KIST and EPFL has revealed how virtual reality (VR) can induce self-location illusions and activate the brain's grid cells, which are crucial for spatial navigation. Another in my series highlighting #vMed2024 presenters! Riva Giuseppe and Dr. Brenda K Wiederhold take an evidence-based approach to understanding the #metaverse that is invaluable as this groundbreaking technology takes hold. I really love the focus of this paper on a direct comparison of real world vs digital communities and the fact that #neuroscience is so directly relevant. To quote the authors “Physical communities are born in places. And places engage ‘‘we-mode’’ neurobiological and cognitive processes…. Digital technologies remove physical boundaries, giving people more freedom to choose their activities and groups. At the same time, however, the lack of physical co-presence of community members significantly reduces their possibility of activating‘ ‘we-mode’’…” The metaverse, #augmentedreality and #VR reverse this by engaging the #brain regions associated with the “we-mode”. This is incredibly insightful and well described. Game changing!
