🔍 Reflecting on a sort of Unexpected Journey in Hospital Pharmacy 🏥 ✨ Dear LinkedIn Community, Today I'm sharing the end of an enriching nine-month-ish experience as a pharmacist at Centro Hospitalar do Porto (now ULSSA) - a home and a journey that brought me back to the technical side after almost 15 years, fulfilling an old career dream. 🍀 Happy-go-lucky | Frame 1 | Strike: The transition from a corporate position was met with skepticism from those closest to me (yes, I've heard the word "crazy" one too many times). But the fact is that accepting my gut instinct to pursue this challenge was a stepping stone to unparalleled rewards and a path back to myself. Remembering what someone once wisely said: “you are the author of your own story. If you don’t like where this chapter is going, it’s ok to start a new one’”. 🌟 Patient-Centric Impact: The time spent at the hospital was a breath of fresh air, allowing me to immerse myself deeply in patient care, health education and treatment compliance. The team spared no effort to ensure that my pedal was smooth but strong, helping me with up-to-date information and where to get tools to most quickly improve my performance (an example and gratitude that I hope to repay soon!). It reignited my passion for the technical intricacies of pharmaceutical work and opened doors for personal and professional growth. As hard as it is emotionally to have to deal with such difficult realities, working with and for people, witnessing the positive transformations in patients' lives, reinforced my commitment to healthcare and underscored the vital role pharmacists play in holistic patient care. 🚀 Exciting Prospects Ahead: The lessons learned and the connections made during this time will undoubtedly always be important to me. To ULSSA and the Pharmaceutical Team I can only be immensely thankful for having believed in me. Now, transitioning back to management is like coming home to a place of belonging. Being remembered of what’s out there to conquer. And the exciting project ahead left me no doubts about this next phase. I'm ready for the challenges and opportunities ahead and look forward to bringing a fresh perspective to my new team (soon to be announced). Let's connect and continue the conversation! Many GP pharmacists aspire to become partners, but it takes a lot of hard work to get there. Getting embedded in the practice, having a good understanding of income streams and reports, and consistently making an impact are essential requirements for making that step to partnership. But the most important is to build trust with the partners and “prove yourself”. By making a difference and embedding myself in the practice, I became an indispensable member of the team and was rewarded with partnership. Success as a GP partner requires not only excellent clinical expertise but also good business acumen, strong leadership skills, effective communication skills, flexibility, time management skills, and ongoing professional development. If you’re considering becoming a GP partner, it’s essential to actively develop these skills continuously. My journey to becoming a GP pharmacist and a partner was a fulfilling one, and I have a passion for process improvement and ensuring the safety and quality of healthcare practices. Degrees/Certifications are entry level tickets in your career aka what I like to call “the game” With each one, you have the opportunity of sitting closer to the field They can definitely help but it’s the reps in the real world that are going to define your career A certfication/degree is far from a guarantee For example, in pharmacy for me: - 2018 Graduated Pharmacy School - 2020 Completed PGY-1 - 2021 Completed PGY-2 (Pain Mgt/Pall Care) - 2021 Hired as Pain Stewardship Pharmacist At this point I had like 3,000 hours training in pall/pain (reps). Some hands on, some presentations etc. But even with this, the past 3 years after residency I’ve been diving into any opportunity I can, and learning robust information on the job. Things I never experienced in my training. Understanding that with reps and an open mindset maybe I’ll get where I want to be someday down the road. So don’t get hung up on a certification/degree and try to honestly seek out the on the job experience if you can. You won’t regret it.

It has just been over 8 weeks working as a Trainee Pharmacist. This is what I’ve learned so far: - Applying your knowledge from your studies directly to areas that benefits the patient wellbeing has been very empowering. - I am still learning to adjust my working and learning routine, which has completely changed from when I was in university. - Be fearless when asking questions, no matter how you may think of the content of the question. It is sometimes easier said than done, but realising this is liberating, and you grow so much in overall understanding when you've asked. - Taking notes of critical points or questions in a diary or any note-taking format when you see something exciting and making a quick search on them questions in your free/study time, I find it very satisfying when you finally understand your question after doing some research (e.g. through internet/ asking a colleague). - Having the appreciation of the work and contribution that other staff members (different job titles) in the pharmacy department put in to provide the best patient care. - Lastly, enjoying the new chapter of your pharmacy journey.
