I wonder if #Superleague passed through the minds of the UCI when adopting these measures on the first of march, and especially the following measure: “From now on, riders – men and woman – in the top 20 of the latest UCI Elite Cyclo-cros Ranking will no longer be able to take part in national events.” (cfr. https://lnkd.in/ef9TPVXq)   Looking at Superleague I can imagine the CJEU finding with regard to the UCI and this measure, that: “Article 101(1) TFEU must be interpreted as meaning that the adoption and implementation … of rules by associations which are responsible for CYCLO-CROSS at world and European levels and which pursue in parallel various economic activities related to the organisation of competitions, REFUSING PARTICIPATION IN COMPETITIONS ORGANISED BY THIRD-PARTY UNDERTAKINGS, on European Union territory, and controlling the participation of professional CYCLO-CROSS TEAMS and RIDERS in such competitions … where there is NO FRAMEWORK for those various powers providing for substantive criteria and detailed procedural rules suitable for ensuring that they are transparent, objective, non-discriminatory and PROPORTIONATE, constitutes a decision by an association of undertakings having as its object the prevention of competition.” (cfr. CJEU’s findings under paragraph 258 in superleague concerning article 101(1) https://lnkd.in/eUJ7fNzg)   The UCI having a framework in place that ticks all the other boxes mentioned by the CJEU is not something I’d bet my money on. Furthermore I am quite opposed to the idea that the UCI makes use of its powers in a proportionate way.   Organisers of national events already face difficulties when ‘the big three’ are not at the start line. Refusing participation to the whole top 20 of the UCI elite cyclo-cross ranking - both men and woman – could very well, as somebody pointed out in the Sporza comment section, ‘cost the organisers of national events their heads’.   The UCI should be careful not to kill off a sport in its roots by ambitioning a flower whose blossoming is uncertain. #superleague #CJEU #UCI #Cyclocross

If flying is magic, how would you call glider-flying? A picture tells more than a thousand words. This is my former colleague Alberto Tagliabue from UPS after his first flight ever in a glider. (Thank you again Alberto for allowing me to use your big smile once more)   Last week I wrote a post about my new voluntary "job" in a commission, part of the Dutch gliding community, that is involved in selecting pilots for European and World Championships. This under the umbrella association of the Dutch KNVvL representing all air-sports.   The reason I’ve started writing stories again on LinkedIn is to share the beauty of glider-flying for a bigger audience, but also write about the magic of flying in general, it deserves definitely more positive attention.✈️ But first and foremost, the focus will be on gliders, how they can fly for hundreds of km’s pure on solar power (talking about sustainability!) the training and ultimately participating in local and international competitions. Flying competitions can be quite expensive, just like sailing for example. Other than sailing it is hard to find big sponsors enabling young pilots to compete in the top of senior championships, but you never know, life can be full of surprises. Luckily in the Netherlands we do have a sponsorship from within the gliding community for junior-pilots to get experience in competing in international championships. We've been working with Kálmán Furkó from the rowing sector for quite some time now, and we're happy to share his end of year summary with you: "This year, I have ended with mixed emotions. At the World University Games in China, we won a bronze medal in lightweight doubles with Bence Szabó, which we are very proud of, as it is our first medal in an Olympic event. Then came the World Championships, where we wanted to go one step further after last year's silver medal, but unfortunately, we didn't manage to do so; we finished silver again, but we did our best, so we can be happy with this result (we competed in lightweight two). As for the rest of this year, we have started the preparation for the next season, including the Olympic qualification tournament in Szeged, where we would like to qualify for the Olympics with Bence. France project capitalisation; Olympics, sport France has reputedly observed British Olympic success with Lottery funding ( a huge increase between Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008, pds36/209mn) and implemented a similar approach (FT weekend 27/28 July). We shall see if there is a correlation between resources and success. It seems likely, though funding alone is not the only requirement, that much is clear. One might look at the parallel position in football. One might predict with a fair degree of accuracy, perhaps, the result of the Premier League at the end of each season by looking at the resources available at the start. This will be seen in a combination of factors, people, premises, management much of which might be traced to capital invested. Which again makes the outliers that much more curious and meriting review. How was it done? In this Leicester City and Daley Thompson have something in common, something so unusual that it merits more than passing thought. And, to focus on the Olympics, brings to mind yet again how astonishing is the achievement of Daley Thompson. And how one might identify others and nurture those with exceptional ability. And thus far today 31/7 France sits at 3 in the table ranked as ever by gold medals. Perhaps we shall see the process working, though the US has extraordinary performers (in normal course) in pool, gym, track and field.

𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 If there's one thing I've learned from my passion for sailing, it's that the skills acquired on the open water can be incredibly valuable in the world of leadership and team management. Sailing, much like leading a team in a professional setting, requires coordination, communication, and a clear sense of direction. 1. 𝘚𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬 When you're at sea, it's crucial to chart a course and stick to it. It can be ambitious, but it NEEDS to be achievable.  As a #leader, it's your responsibility to set a clear vision and direction for your team. Just like a sailor must adjust their sails to stay on course, you must adapt your strategies to navigate the challenges that arise. 2. 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘒𝘦𝘺 Sailing is a team sport, and effective communication is essential. The reason is that communication needs to be effective and people need to know exactly what you are talking about, either in a boat or in a corporate environment.  In your workplace, ensure that your team members understand their responsibilities and encourage open lines of communication. 3. 𝘌𝘮𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘈𝘥𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺 Sailing can be unpredictable, with changing weather conditions and unexpected obstacles. You need to be prepared to adapt your goals and remember that you set them up considering a set of variables than can have changed, like the weather for instance. As such, don’t be afraid to change your objectives because your environment has shifted. Embrace adversity as an opportunity for growth and innovation within your team. 4. Trust Your Crew On a boat, you trust your crew members with your safety, just as in business, you trust your team with the success of your projects. Building trust is crucial in both scenarios. 5. 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘮 𝘜𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 Sailing in adverse conditions can be nerve-wracking, but remaining calm is essential. In leadership, your team will look to you for guidance during high-stress situations. Don’t stop moving, no matter what happens! You’re only in competition with your yesterday’s self, no one else. My second marathon completed and despite the pain, the want to take a break, I powered through and feel all the better for it. Barcelona marathon was fantastic - a great city to run in, well organised, a great atmosphere, and ideal weather. Many people would ask ‘why put yourself through such challenges, such discomfort, and such an extreme?’ - because I want to push myself, learn more, and grow as a person. Keeping on moving doesn’t mean you have to always be going at 100mph, you can slow down and take stock at times when needed, and at other times you can speed-up and race. Despite there being nearly 20,000 runners, I was only competing against myself and my previous marathon PB, I was not focused on what times others completed the race in. I was super pleased to beat my PB from Lisbon, finishing the marathon in 3h 50min. Whilst this was a personal achievement, there was a shared sense of accomplishment from everyone in the event.
