Last week, Keystone welcomed Brenna Wynn Greer, Ph.D. for a special virtual learning session in observance of Juneteenth. As our president Jeff Marowits put it, “Juneteenth is a sacred day in America’s journey to form a “more perfect union.” As is our custom, we aim to retell the story of Juneteenth for both those who know that story and those that do not.” Dr. Greer, author of “Represented: The Black Imagemakers Who Reimagined African American Citizenship” and associate professor of history at Wellesley College, offered her perspective on the history and significance of Juneteenth. ❓ Why February? Unveiling Black History Month's Significance: Black History Month's choice of February is deeply rooted in honoring the profound impact of African Americans on the nation's history. Initiated by Carter G. Woodson in 1926, February was selected for its significance to the Black community, marking a period for reflection and celebration of Black excellence and resilience. Woodson, a Harvard-educated historian, was inspired to promote the study and recognition of African American achievements after witnessing the lack of representation in history. This was a step towards highlighting the indispensable role of Black Americans in shaping the nation. As we observe #BlackHistoryMonth, it's a call to honor the legacy and achievements of Black individuals across all aspects of society. #blackexcellence #historymatters #blackhistory #didyouknow
