Hisense or HiNonsense? In the latest episode of “Things Only A Sport Translator Would Notice,” during one of the less exciting games of the EURO (let’s be honest, it was probably England), my attention was drawn to the digital advertising boards around the pitch. The first read, “Hisense TV No.2 Globally” - So far, so normal. Then, the board did an animated scroll to reveal the next line: “Never settle for No. 2 globally.” “Oops,” I thought, “somebody’s forgotten to set the animation to reveal the first half of the second sentence. They obviously shouldn’t say that!” But then I noticed it again, during another match, and surely they’d have fixed it pretty quickly if it were, in fact, a mistake, so I took to Google (other search engines are, apparently, available) to see if I could get the bottom of it. My search turned up two facts: one, there were at least a few odd souls like me wondering the same thing, and two, the slogan was entirely correct and deliberate. It would appear they want to imply *they* - Hisense - will never settle for being just number 2 in the world. The problem, as many of you will have spotted, is that they are *actually* telling their potential customers to avoid their products. To start, they let everyone know they are number 2 globally, and then comes the blunder: they use the imperative, instructing the reader/viewer to “never settle for no.2 globally.” Hisense is a Chinese company, so I can only assume this is an exceptionally prominent (not to mention expensive) example of poor-to-nonexistent localisation. Even if it is not, and the slogan is the product of an English-speaking marketing team, it is certainly a good advert for hiring professional linguists to check your copy, be it translated or not.
