In the games business it is sometimes all too easy to become inwardly focused...we are after all, an exciting, evolving industry with highs & lows aplenty... To do that to the exclusion of all else however is foolhardy. There is a whole world of innovation out there, particularly the broader world of "tech". Whether we take inspiration from new business models or utilise emerging technologies, there is value in looking further afield. Equally....there are major misconceptions about gaming from the tech industry leaders I speak to. A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing, and not getting the right advice can lead to spurious conclusions & expensive failures (Google Stadia anyone?) Lets be clear GAMING IS NOT A SUBSET OF TECH It is a highly *creative* endeavour, with a clear focus on *fun* for the consumer This means both the makers & consumers of the product have a very different mindset those who'd build a more general tech-based business. The issues are not insurmountable though...tech and gaming may not be siblings, but they are cousins. With the right advice on market dynamics, opportunity identification and strategic execution, tech companies CAN win in the gaming world. They just need the right guide. I'll be at London Tech week.

In Omdia’s 2024 Live Service Dev Research report we found a particularly surprising stat: 📈 There was a 94% increase of devs using “external tech” to build their live service games. 🤯 This increase is staggering and shows that understanding the best way to evaluate external solutions is a unique skill that Technical Directors and CTOs at game studios will need to refine in the coming months and years. ❓ What systems do you apply to best validate you vendor when looking to “Build vs. Buy” #gamedev #research #videogames

Despite our team having a solid background in mobile gaming and many of our members hailing from mobile studios, we find the mid-tier segment on Steam, which we call the AA segment, the most fitting platform for our ideas. We've moved beyond being an indie team driven solely by passion, yet we're not aiming to become a massive corporation churning out high-budget projects. Mid-sized projects, in terms of budget and development time, offer us the greatest flexibility. We strive to inject something fresh and original into all our projects, and this format suits us well. At the same time, our commitments to partners and investors underscore the seriousness of our intentions and allow us to work on projects we love. The biggest advantage of this segment is that it does not stifle creativity. The work doesn’t turn into mere craft, and the desire to create doesn’t succumb to formalism and bureaucracy. We highly value this and aim to maintain it as our distinctive feature. Undoubtedly, there are millions of other formats and exceptions, and it’s quite possible that Undead Fox will evolve into something truly amazing and unexpected. MASSIVE congrats to all my people at mod.io on this one! 💙 It’s been a long time coming to hit this milestone, but if you compare the time it took to go from 0 - 200 million downloads and the time it took to go from 500 million to a billion what would you see? A real steep trajectory showing how their success is snowballing. And that snowball is rolling down a mountain; growth is going to continue exploding and jumping exponentially. The lesson here? Put in the work. Take the time to build a solid foundation. Talk about what you have to offer - not not what you may have in the future. Stick to the vision and just fucking execute with relentless focus. And what do you get when you do all that? The best UGC platform for studios of any size, on any platform, using any engine. This is a little embarrassing, but up until last year I had never attended a gaming event! I know...crazy right? The event? Wisconsin Games Alliance's M+Dev. I met a ton of great people and sat in on some insightful talks. Don't forget to pick up this year's tickets for the event in November. Let me know if you're going :) I'd like to connect with more likeminded folks, play up and coming indie games, and see if maybe I can help a few people along the way by sharing some of my experience along the way. What kind of experience? Well...starting up a new indie studio, selling a game IP, signing a new game with a kick ass publisher (hi, Midwest Games!), building remote teams, the difference between game dev as a hobby and as a business, pitfalls starting a project as a solo dev and then scaling up to bring in others, etc etc. So...what events would you recommend? They don't have to be massive endeavors like PAX, but any suggestions are greatly appreciated 🤘

Hub, campus, ecosystem...words that you hear a lot in real-estate, infrastructure and business organization. Complex, large words that desire a lot of effort, focus and resources. But sometimes things develop without someone noticing...they somehow "evolve". While we are working together with our partners from game – Verband der deutschen Games-Branche e.V., medianet berlinbrandenburg e.V. and other partners to create a place in Berlin that would represent the German gaming industry, somehow some of the interested parties already assembled in a former banking building close to the famous Berliner Bahnhof Zoo. We are far from being an ecosystem and maybe also you would not define the activities taking place as campus-like, but a game developer, an IT and programming academy as well as a dominating eSports organization under one roof? Well, I would at least call us a hub...
