All eyes are on the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) after various tweaks to SBTi’s approach in the last few years, including updated guidance to their Corporate Net Zero Standard and, more recently, asking businesses to provide more information on the target validation process. But, more recently their plans to allow for the extension of environmental attribute certificates (EACs) have caught our attention. And following this announcement, it’s been widely reported that SBTi staff have been revolting against management, calling for their resignation, indicating unrest is spreading throughout the organisation. High standard validation for our climate targets 👏 The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has officially validated JM’s climate targets, highlighting our commitment to align our decarbonisation targets with climate science. SBTi has classified our Scope 1 and 2 near-term target ambition and has determined it is in line with the 1.5°C trajectory. The Target Validation Team has also evaluated our Scope 1, 2, and 3 long-term target ambition and determined our target(s) are aligned with the SBTi's 1.5°C mitigation pathways for reaching 2050 or sooner, currently the most ambitious designation available through the SBTi process. As members of civil society, SAR organisations, including KNRM, are keen not to worsen climate change. They recognise a profound responsibility to avoid exacerbating the situation and are committed to taking every possible measure to combat climate change. Since the KNRM frequently operates within nature reserves, where environmental preservation is crucial, minimising emissions becomes a paramount concern. Exciting times for climate action! The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has introduced stricter rules to ensure financial institutions' climate goals align with the 1.5°C target. With 4,204 corporate plans validated, SBTi's guidance is crucial for impactful change. Corporate plans must now align operational and energy usage emissions with the 1.5°C target within 5-10 years. Emissions form financing activities and investments should aim for well below 2°C. Companies must also disclose comprehensive fossil fuels strategies and set ambitious goals.
