Balraj Panwar Puts India on Global Rowing & Sculling Map as Lone Participant at 2024 Olympics. Thought-provoking: why do we not have more participants in rowing & sculling events at Olympics, Isn't it ? Is India lacking in a sculling tradition or culturally disengaged? Not really! Vallam Kali, an ancient tradition in Kerala, has roots going back several centuries. It’s deeply ingrained in our culture, festivals, celebrations. 👏 I see it as 14 Olympic gold medal missed opportunities for India-Single sculls Double sculls, Quadruple sculls,Coxless pair,Coxless four,Eight Lightweight double sculls! 💔 The traditional snake boat races (Vallam Kali) are a cultural hallmark in Kerala, attracting global attention, showcasing talent in various rowing disciplines, including sculling. 🙌 So why can’t Kerala specifically—& India in general—start honing sculling skills to establish a stronger presence in these events, eventually, seize the opportunity to win medals? 🏆 Can Indian corporations begin this journey by setting up training centers in Kerala, engaging youth, and identifying talent? 🛠️ #Olympics2028 Can we organize more rowing & sculling events with the goal of elevating them to formal sports? 🛶 Could centers of excellence, international participation, & robust training programs foster a pipeline of talent? 🚣🏻♀️ The sculling talent in Kerala can be nurtured substantially through sponsorship and patronage—what’s stopping us?!! Likewise, we have several sports that are a part of the culture across Indian states, so where is the gap, thoughts?? The sport of Golf in India has been there for over 100 years. Countries like Thailand, Korea etc. have made strategic policies to develop the game and players since the last 30 years. The results of their Professional players on global stage is visible. We need to build this sport as a "career" option for the new generation. Ministry of sports and Indian golf associations need to focus on a "Golf professionals' annual income. My gut feel is that a "professional golfer' (women / men), should have a minimum avg. annual income of 24 lacs. Present numbers are very low. New generation is only looking at this sport to get admissions in International universities.

When Was it Last Time You Sharpened Your Axe? This is a common phrase for #skilling and #reskillng oneself when we find gaps in our expected performance. Past few days I played three #golf #tournaments back to back. The results were consistent as per my handicap, but not satisfactory. I have observed many golfers keep improving their games while they play and I am doing the same. However, if you want to move to next ORBIT it helps to go back to your coach in driving range to learn & practice new shots... What do you think? Isn't it important to sharpen your Axe time and again? It was an honor to be invited to speak at the prestigious Golf & Turf Summit 2024 in Pune, India. Anytime we have the opportunity to share our insights into how to improve participation in sports, and in this case, the game of golf, we do! Combining my experience developing golf facilities around the world with that of having hand in growing participation in various sports through qualified coaching and market specific programming, I shared my thoughts on developing 'right-sized Golf Parks' with Golf India via their GIA Newsletter. Chandu Champion- PadamShri Murlikant Petkar's unwavering zeal and never-say-die attitude helped India 🇮🇳 win its first individual gold medal at the Paralympic Games in 1972. “चैंपियन वही है जो हार मानने से पहले एक और प्रयास करता है। सीखना और आगे बढ़ना ही असली जीत है।” “A champion is the one who makes one more attempt before giving up. True victory lies in learning and progressing.” This fantastic movie inspired by real events:- 1. Never ever give up on your dreams. 2. Dream big, think about it, live it and keep it in your mind, eyes and soul. Nothing else. 3. When others mock you, make it your strength and fire inside you. 4. When life gives you chance, never get distracted 5. Keep asking yourself: What's coming between me and my dreams and remove all distractions. 6. Have dream to serve your nation, make your nation and people proud. 7. Never accept what people say, prove yourself of your you are worth and you decide your worth.

Many believe athletes who represent the state or nation have it easy, but the reality is they often struggle without proper support. It's not just a local issue; it's nationwide. Athletes need backing during their training, not just when they win. What good is a cash prize if they can't afford essentials like nutrition, training, equipment, supplements, testing, physio and travel? We need to change our mindset. Private organisations like JSW Sports Pvt Ltd and RISE Worldwide Limited give hope to sport by spotting and nurturing talent. Let's move beyond short-term patriotism and invest in our athletes' growth—cheer them on when they win and support them with kindness when they don't.

With Royal Calcutta Golf Club marking India as home to the world's second oldest golf course, the heritage is undeniably rich. Yet, the potential of golf as a mainstream sport remains largely untapped. The call to arms is for us to transform this imperial sport into a widespread pursuit. The numbers are telling – with golf's inclusion in the Olympics and a professional market worth 100 crore INR, the trajectory is set. However, challenges such as the perception of exclusivity, the sport's expensive nature, and the scarcity of public driving ranges necessitate strategic intervention. What's the game plan? 1. Infrastructure Development: Constructing 100 public driving ranges could democratize access, allowing budding golfers to forge their path without hefty memberships. 2. Training & Promotion: Establishing academies and training centres, especially in the wake of golf’s Olympic stature, could catalyze the nurturing of talent right from the school level. 3. Fiscal Measures: Reducing taxes on golf equipment and considering rental models could alleviate the financial barriers to entry. Endorsements by Indian golfing stalwarts like Anirban Lahiri and Shiv Kapur are already placing Indian golf on the global map. It's high time to leverage this momentum, bolster the infrastructure, and alleviate fiscal impediments. Our goal? To shift the paradigm from golf being a 'sport of leisure' to a 'sport of choice'—making it accessible, approachable, and aspirational for the masses. India's green is vast and welcoming—let's drive the sport of golf to a future where it's not just played but cherished by every stratum of society. #GolfInIndia #SportsDevelopment #InclusiveGrowth #OlympicSport #GolfingFuture PC: Manoj Joshi
