The forgotten Nubian pyramids of Sudan: These mighty pyramids were built by one of AFRICA’s earliest civilisations. Here’s what to know: Powered by #agriculture, ancient Sudan’s great #civilisations thrived and erected mighty temples and tombs honoring their gods, kings, queens, and nobles. Their building boom left behind some 255 pyramids—more than twice the number #Egypt constructed next door. Yet few #travellers have seen these hulking sandstone relics. That’s because Sudan’s #tourism industry has been impeded by two #civilwars (1956-1972 and 1983-2005) and the battle for independence that led to the creation of #SouthSudan in 2011. Travel to #Sudan is still currently not advised due to ongoing civil unrest related to a 2021 #coup. However, when tensions ease, Sudan offers a singular chance to camp beside crowd-free ancient pyramids and to learn about the mysterious reign of these little-known pharaohs. A guided road trip along the #Nile Valley takes you from the splendid temple at Soleb to the #UNESCO-recognized Meroë, with the world’s largest cache of pyramids. Built of granite and sandstone in the Nubian style, the Meroe pyramids are marked by small bases and steep slopes between 6 (19ft) and 30 metres (98ft) in height, in contrast with Egypt's colossal Pyramids of Giza, the greatest of which is up to 139 (456ft) metres high. Black Pharaohs and a once great city Nubia once stretched south from Aswan, Egypt, to modern-day #Khartoum, #Sudan. Travel Daastan group at #Bhambore Bhambore, also known as Bhanbhore or Bhanbhor, is an important archaeological site located near the town of Thatta in Sindh, Pakistan. It is believed to be the remains of an ancient port city, possibly linked to the Indus Valley Civilization, and it holds significant historical and cultural value. Historical Significance: Bhanbore is often associated with ancient maritime trade and is believed to have been a bustling port during the early centuries of the Common Era. The site is thought to have been connected to Sassanid Persia, as well as the Arabian Peninsula. It is hypothesized that Bhanbore could be the city of Debal, which is mentioned in early Islamic accounts, including the writings of Al-Masudi and other historians. Debal was the site of the first significant Arab conquest of the Indian subcontinent in 711 CE by Muhammad bin Qasim. Excavations and Archaeology: Archaeological excavations at Bhanbore have revealed the remains of fortified structures, pottery, coins, and other artifacts that suggest the city was a thriving port. The site has yielded evidence of trade and cultural exchange with regions as far as Persia and Arabia. The ancient city's layout, including the harbor, shows its importance as a maritime center. Architectural Features: The remains of mosques, tombs, and other buildings suggest that Bhanbore was a thriving urban center during the early Islamic period. Some scholars argue that the city was strategically important for the Arab expansion into the Indian subcontinent. Decline: It is believed that Bhanbore experienced a decline in its importance due to shifts in maritime routes and natural changes, including river changes and silting, which caused the port to become less accessible. The word “pyramid” is synonymous with Egypt, but it is actually neighbouring Sudan that is home to the world’s largest collection of these spectacular ancient structures. Beginning around 2500BC, Sudan’s ancient Nubian civilisation left behind more than 200 pyramids that rise out of the desert across three archaeological sites: El Kurru, Jebel Barkal and Meroe, in addition to temples, tombs and royal burial chambers.
