I really feel sad for our discipline (marketing) sometimes. Day after day it becomes more evident that many practitioners in the field lack basic understanding of the fundamentals. The more i look into it, i realize that its because we as marketing professionals don’t take our own industry seriously. It is one of the very few industries that doesn’t require an educational background to enter it. You can be a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer and you can easily get a job in Marketing because, why not? Its just a bunch of people who sit and throw ideas all day. This becomes frustrating to the ones actually investing time and money into honing their skills and acquire the “science” of it. Let that sink in for a bit.
I think it’s also because of how marketers are rewarded or incentivized by their clients or team. It’s often not appreciated so people look for shortcuts. My two cents.
It's disheartening, isn't it? Investing in skills sets you apart. Maybe a certification system could elevate the field and ensure a baseline competency. Let's keep pushing for recognition of the true science behind marketing!
In the end - the proof is in the pudding. True marketers, like yourself, will always outshine the impostors.
Ideas need to be executed right for the message to be said correctly and many other factors that shape the skills a marketer should have. Some are just in it to be rewarded for their ideas, but when have no knowledge on how to execute it.
I love this, such an on point comment. Thank you for sharing!

10moI don't agree with that completely. In my career, I have always seen marketers with content or journalism background do better, so I have always hired people with that background only in marketing, because they at least have some basic understanding. Also, there are many marketing courses available now. So, candidates with background of studies in literature/content, mass communication, marketing, will always do better. But, unfortunately, some employers and clients think of saving money by hiring people who are not from this background.
