There is a difference between Marketing and Sales. Although they exsist to support each other. Do not list a role for a Marketing Manager and require them to make cold calls, go door to door, or offer them a commission based contract. That is sales. Effective marketing enhances your digital footprint, drives customers to you, aids in public/customer relations, and tells the story of your brand. Not to say the two departments don’t occasionally blend. But let’s stop with the nonsense of calling an entry level sales associate a “marketing specialist or marketing manager”

Stepping out of my comfort zone and into the field of sales has been a game-changer! As a digital marketer, I was used to focusing on brand awareness and building desirability, credibility, and trust, but on the other side of the coin, I've learned that sales has a whole different dynamic. It's not just about putting together a compelling campaign - it's about making personal connections, honing your persuasive abilities, and out-maneuvering the competition. In the field, I quickly realized that digital marketing and digital selling require very different skillsets. As a marketer, I was used to working behind the screen, carefully crafting messaging and optimizing campaigns. But in sales, it's all about that face-to-face interaction - reading body language, handling objections, and closing the deal. And let me tell you, it's not easy. Customers can be fickle - one day they're practically begging for your product, the next they're nowhere to be found. And the level of persistence and grit required to navigate the sales process is something I've gained a whole new appreciation for. But through all the challenges, I've also developed a deep respect for the sales profession. It takes a special kind of person to thrive in this environment - one who can think on their feet, adapt to changing circumstances, and never take "no" for an answer. Most importantly, this experience has reinforced for me that every role within an organization plays a critical part. Whether you're in marketing, sales, operations, or beyond, we're all working towards the same goal. And we have to respect each person's unique contributions, no matter their position. That's a lesson I'll carry with me moving forward. #DigitalMarketing #Sales #CareerTransition #ProfessionalGrowth

UNDERSTANDING SALES & MARKETING Nearly 75% of hiring managers & teams really fail to clearly differentiate between Sales & Marketing. According to my experience, the correct sentence is actually Marketing & Sales not Sales & Marketing in the sense that goods & services can not be sold before being (known) on market, they sell after being taken to the market or after the public is made aware of through marketing. Key 🗝️ difference between Marketing & Sales; 📌Marketing as the name suggests, is much about finding means of penetrating the market to take and introduce the product by various means i.e advertising & some other engaging activities to inform the public or prospective customers about the product, were to get it from (4Ps/7Ps). In twenty first century, marketing is done more with less physical meeting with prospective clients through various social media platforms. Marketing do more with product. 📌Whereas Sales is the point at which the product on the market (goods & services) are exchanged or converted into money (when customers pays for goods & services), So, sales focuses more on talking & negotiating with customers to conclude deals, sales is just an immediate result of marketing. Sales do more with customers. 📌Marketing & Sales work hand in hand, compliment & support each other. However, as noted, the difference is very minimal. Understanding is paramount! #MarketingManagement #SalesManagement #BusinessDevelopment

As someone who has done B2B and B2C sales for over 3 decades I disagree with so much in this article. The job of marketing is so different from product vs brand vs service vs PR. I used to do b2b industrial chemical and lubricant sales- we had a marketing department, yet when I called on a new company, they had NO IDEA who we were versus Chevron, or Exmo- does that mean that my marketing dept sucked? No. Their job was to create the material that made my presentation comprehendible and relatable to my “sales pitch”. So while I agree that marketing and sales are different, and work as a team, I don’t think it’s always what this author states. It is not marketing’s job to build and maintain a brand- that’s EVERY employee’s job! If you have a bad dining experience every time you eat somewhere do you care how funny or engaging their commercial is? Or do you tell all your friend their food and/or service sucks? Sales isn’t about “closing marketing deals” sales is about creating value and solving a client’s needs. What are your thoughts? #sales #marketing

Marketing Director, Messaging, Thought Leadership and Sales Enablement to Drive Client Experience and Growth
I was having a conversation with a business owner the other day and we got to talking about marketing and sales. He asked me, from my perspective, what was the one quality he should look for from his sales representatives. I told him that I think the most important quality is empathy. He asked about drive, charisma, passion, knowledge and I said all of those are important but without empathy, the salesperson can't put themselves in the customer's place and be able to genuinely talk about how the product/service would benefit them. For a winning combination, I told him to consider hiring a marketing expert who can understand the client and create powerful messaging that resonates and to arm the sales teams accordingly.

Ever wonder why your boss might ask why you, as a marketer, aren't closing sales? 🤔 The world of sales and marketing can be confusing, especially depending on the company you work for. But here's a simple way to look at it. Imagine sales is like asking someone out on a date, and marketing is why they say yes (or no). 💼💡 While you can get by with just one, it works much better when they work together. You wouldn't want your marketing team trying to seal the deal, just like you wouldn't want your sales team only focused on finding new leads. So, can a salesperson be good at marketing, and vice versa? !Yep! But it's important to know they're different but related skills. When they work well together, it's pretty amazing. Do you agree? Let's chat in the comments! 👇

VP of Sales - Descope | Managing Partner at The Virtual VP | Hypergrowth Agency for Brands in Cyber & Tech
Before hiring your first Sales person – fractional or full-time – get a great Marketing person. Marketing is the foundation: ✔ Defining Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) and Personas ✔ Creating the right messaging ✔ Crafting initial brand image ✔ Preparing resources (presentations, collateral) for Sales to use ✔ Generating a top-of-the-line pipeline, for Sales to follow-up on Many startups think they know “roughly” what their ICP is, so just need a seller to go hunting for these prospects. Such thinking can be costly – money and time wise. Your sellers will: ❌ Waste time cold-calling the wrong prospects ❌ Use inaccurate messaging, that doesn’t resonate with prospects (even the right ones) ❌ Utilize subpar presentations and collateral Much of what Sales does is based on Marketing. The better the work Marketing has done, the more chances your seller has to succeed. Which marketing role to hire first? There are so many roles out there. My friend and colleague Ilan Vagenshtein, a highly experienced marketing leader and product marketing consultant, just wrote about this a few days ago. Ilan recommends starting with a product marketing expert, or a marketing generalist who has strong product marketing experience. He explains why in his post, which I'll place a link to in the first comment. Founders – what has your experience been like? Sellers on my network – what do you think?
