Analog, simple, fun. Enjoyed this bit of Lichtenstein local knowledge shared outside the tourism information office during our recent visit to Vaduz. Although this is a small (and very low tech) marketing tactic, there are a few reasons why I appreciated this sign and its spirit. 1. It shared a fun local piece of information that I could easily learn and apply immediately. Destinations should assume their visitors don't know anything about them, including what they would consider very basic things...like the local word for "hello." Share factoids or local words, dishes, drinks or other insights in a fun way to engage visitors to learn more about the local place, culture, or language in an experiential way. For example, until I saw this sign I was greeting everyone on the hiking trail or elsewhere with "Hallo!", but afterwards I switched to "Hoi!" Although this is a very small thing, it felt good for me to do...and I do feel like I got more smiles in return :) 2. The power of something analog or physical to get people's attention. In an increasingly digital (and AI) focused world, don't forget the effectiveness of in-destination physical marketing when visitors are eager to learn in the context of the place. Physical nudges like signs are great for helping visitors slow down, learn and (sometimes) act. 3. It spurred curiosity to learn more "Aktuell in Lichtenstein" or information about the place. We decided to go into the TIC *after* seeing this sign because I was curious about the origins of "hoi!" and wanted to learn more about local culture and linguistics to complement the information I had seen online about history. What is a local word or piece of knowledge about your destination that you could share to easily engage travelers...to learn more, to come inside, to use during their trip, or to just appreciate something unique?
