We have all encountered or witnessed car accidents over the years, but recently, my family and I experienced an exceptionally frightening incident. While traveling from Manchester to Southampton, my Renault Megane (1.5Dci) encountered a distressing malfunction with the cruise control near Birmingham. The alarming part was that I had no prior knowledge of any issues with the cruise control. As we approached a slowing traffic situation, attempting to apply the brakes proved futile, and efforts to disengage the cruise control were also unsuccessful. Within seconds, we found ourselves mere meters away from a traffic jam on the M6, where all three lanes were congested with queued vehicles. A collision became inevitable due to the malfunctioning cruise control and jammed brakes. Instinctively, just before the crash, I maneuvered my car into a gap between vehicles in the rightmost and center lanes at 65mph as it was stuck at that speed. This resulted in a slight impact with a car on the left, pushing us to the right, where we collided heavily with another car, ultimately bringing our vehicle to a halt. Fortunately, all airbags deployed, ensuring our safety in the front, and our son, miraculously remained unharmed due to wearing a seatbelt and sitting in a booster seat something we’ve always made him follow since he was a toddler. Despite the minor injuries we sustained in a grave situation, we are thankful that the occupants of the other involved car also remained safe. Although two days have passed, the incident still haunts us at times, but we express gratitude to Allah Almighty for sparing our lives and those around us in a potentially perilous situation. Being a Michael Schumacher fanatic since childhood, it sometimes draws parallels to his Silverstone crash in 1998 when his brakes malfunctioned and he crashed heavily in the tyre wall. Accidents can happen to anyone, even the very best, but it is crucial to learn from them. Even if the cruise control appears to be functioning correctly, periodically disengage it, along with other safety features. I have advised my insurance company to have the car inspected by an Engineer to determine the cause of the cruise control failure, and I sincerely hope that Renault UK and Renault Global Group take this matter seriously, cooperating in a thorough investigation to prevent such issues from recurring and ensuring appropriate action for the safety of similar Renault Megane model cars. Lastly, I urge everyone to drive safely, adhere to traffic rules in both city and highway settings. Plz keep a check on your car’s safety features and don’t blindly rely on them. Feel truly blessed to have survived this with minor injuries but perhaps the mental scar will probably last a lifetime.
