Deep tech startups and SMEs not only position themselves as leaders in their respective fields but also contribute significantly to technological progress and economic growth.

ERRIN Director, Pirita Lindholm, recently shared her insights on the importance of the upcoming Week of Innovative Regions in Europe 2024 conference in an article published by Science|Business. 🗨️Reflecting on the future regional innovation funding, Pirita stated “On the one hand we would like to see much stronger support for place-based ecosystems in the future framework programme, maybe throughout the programme, but also potentially strengthening existing programmes like the European Innovation Ecosystems (EIE), which supports the regional innovation valleys initiative." The 2024 WIRE conference in Budapest will bring together Europe's top innovation experts and policy makers to explore ways to bridge regional development gaps and boost EU competitiveness. As Europe faces rising global competition in research and technology, the conference will focus on strategies to strengthen innovation at regional level, including through the upcoming FP10 framework. Seven EU lead candidates will debate at the TU/e campus about the course Europe should take on innovation as technology becomes increasingly important for our prosperity, well-being and safety. 🇪🇺 On May 14th the European Innovation Debate - organized by TU/e, Brainport and entrepreneurial organization FME - will take place, just under a month before the European parliamentary elections, for which the Netherlands goes to the polls on June 6. The lead candidates present are Bas Eickhout (GL/PvdA), Malik Azmani (VVD), Dirk Gotink (NSC), Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy (D66), Tom Berendsen (CDA), Jessika van Leeuwen (BBB, #2) and Reinier van Lanschot (Volt). Hellen van der Plas, CEO of Signify Benelux, will give a keynote. The welcome speeches will be provided by Robert-Jan Smits (president TU/e), Paul van Nunen (director Brainport Development) and Theo Henrar (chairman FME). Today I addressed an important event on Advanced Materials happening in Bergamo, Italy. Here are a few thoughts I’d like to share with you.   ❗ Advanced Materials are of strategic importance for Europe (think about the goals of green and digital transitions and Europe's competitiveness and sovereignty). Given the intensifying global competition we need to act fast. 🎡   The Commission Communication: “Advanced Materials for Industrial Leadership” points to a fragmentation of R&I programmes and call for a better coordination between the Commission and EU countries. COMING SOON - To follow up on this we will create a Technology Council for Advanced Materials to align priorities across Europe and create synergies between EU and national programmes.
