A roadmap is one great tool to communicate a vision and opportunity. It's not a business plan, and it's not a pitch deck. As this blog post explains: "A roadmap is a strategic plan that defines a goal or desired outcome and includes the major steps or milestones needed to reach it. It also serves as a communication tool, a high-level document that helps articulate strategic thinking—the why—behind both the goal and the plan for getting there." We recommend a product similar to a roadmap when founders raise money for safe, non-innovative ventures (dining, manufacturing, etc.) with great traction ($1m in sales the last two years) and an exciting vision (get to $5m by increasing inventory and capturing more B2B sales). - Hi 👋 I’m Joel Lowy, and a passion for business analysis led me to found Kavana Business Presentations in 2022. Project Manager | Strategic Chief of Staff | Helping tech startups deliver SaaS success through strategic project management & streamlining processes for C-level executives by automating their organization’s workflows.
Let me tell you a story about a project that went from frustrating to flying high, all thanks to a simple tweak. It's a common problem I see with digital projects– people jumping between different apps and tools, making it hard to stay focused and get things done. This can kill project efficiency. In case you haven't heard the term, "context switching" is basically shifting between different tasks or apps on a project. It can slow you down big time. So, back in January 2023, I was brought in to manage a website project that had stalled. It started as a simple crowdfunding platform for agriculture, but they wanted to completely change its offerings into a web app connecting investors to agro-commodity derivatives in the EMEA region. Here's where things got messy. The team was using different apps for everything – tasks, communication, files – you name it. With all this information scattered everywhere, it was impossible to see how the project was progressing. You couldn't tell what was done or what was left. I sat down with the various stakeholders involved and we explored project management tools that could bring everything together. We needed something with file storage, chat features, and a way to track progress. In the end, we chose Monday.com. This one change was a game-changer. By having everything in one central platform, communication got smoother, everyone knew what they were working on, and we could easily see where we stood. It was like a breath of fresh air! The best part? It shaved a whole 10% off our project timeline. See? A little organization can go a long way. This is just one example, but it shows how the right tools can make a huge difference in project success. #mondaycom #digitalprojectmanager #contextswitching #projectmanagementtool #stakeholder #webapp #digitalprokectmanagement #EMEA

As founders, we're often trying to differentiate our product or service in a crowded market. It can be tempting to use generic claims like "higher quality" or "better service". But those don't really tell potential customers why you're different. Instead, use direct comparisons to competitors to highlight your advantages. For example: "While most email services charge per user, we offer unlimited users for one flat fee. So you don't have to worry about extra costs as your team grows." "Our competitor's project management software makes you switch between 3 different views to see task status. Our all-in-one dashboard lets you view everything in one place, saving you time." You get the idea. Demonstrate how a customer would get more value from you through lower costs, better features, higher efficiency, etc. But don't just make empty claims. Back up your comparisons with evidence. Share case studies of customers who switched from competitors to your product. Or quantify the exact time/money saved based on your superior features. In a crowded market, comparisons give you an opportunity to stand out. So leverage them to effectively differentiate your product and convert more prospects. -- If you’re a early-stage founder looking to get first customers, check out Founders Cafe! In our latest essay, we discuss the path to product-market fit for Vertical Software founders. Before any solution can take hold, genuine, sustainable demand must exist in some form, even if market dynamics have suppressed that demand to date. What do you need to hear from your market to validate latent demand? We highlight three critical conditions for PMF—urgency, scalability, and repeatability—and share a simple framework for identifying the various levels of progression.
