⭐ For many reasons, a child may need to receive all, or part of their nutritional needs, via a tube. These client families are affectionately known as ‘tubie families’. ⭐ For tubies, getting the right amount of nutrients looks a little different. Specialised formulas are administered via the tube directly to the stomach or the small intestine. Commercial formulas are regulated by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), and are nutritionally complete (meet evidence-based nutritional values). Your child’s feeding plan is designed to ensure they get the nutrition needed for growth, health and wellbeing. ⭐ Blended tube feeds are an emerging option for our tubie families. The Australasian Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (AusPEN) defines Blended Tube Feeds as ‘blending foods into liquid to feed through a feeding tube’. Blended feeds require planning and attention to food safety, but this is achievable with the right supports. It also means your child can enjoy family meals. ⭐ This month, the Kids Dig Food team are very lucky to be participating in a professional development session with @linabreikAdvAPD from @tubedietitian who is an amazing advocate for Tubies everywhere. ⭐ If your tubie family is considering a transition to Blended Tube Feeds, please speak with your Dietitian - we’re here to support you! As a pediatric registered dietitian of over 30 years, I’ve watched the world evolve as it relates to food, nutrition, and body size. Today, there’s more food shaming, polarized views of food, and more narratives centered on alleviating the emotional toll our social norms of body size and “healthy” eating have caused. And rightfully so. But as more attention focuses on children, food shaming and polarized views seem to be increasing. There’s no room at the table for this. I’m sharing where I stand on the issues of the anti-diet movement, food shaming, and sugary food. https://lnkd.in/e42k9_XM

Celebrating #Nationalnutritionweek2024 Day 6 Join us to promote healthy eating habits and nutritional awareness across the country by explaining the #dietaryguidelinesforindians by #ICMR #Guideline 4- Start feeding homemade semi- solid complimentary foods to the infant soon after 6 months of age Rationale- Homemade preparations are economical, easy to cook, safe and healthy for a growing baby. Points to note: 1. Breastmilk alone is not enough to meet the increase in requirements for a child after 6 months of age. 2. Complementary foods should be introduced soon after 6 months of age, in addition to breastfeeding and should be continued till 2 years of age. 3. Prefer homemade complementary foods. 4. Feed complementary food at least 2-4 times a day depending upon the child’s age. 5. Provide milk, locally available fruits and vegetables as well as eggs and meat. 6. Observe hygiene practices while preparing and feeding complementary foods. 7. Complementary feeding along with breastfeeding should be continued even during diarrhea or other common illness to prevent malnutrition. 8. Limit use of salt in preparation of complementary foods. 9. Avoid foods (biscuits, cakes) and beverages (fruit juices and cool drinks with added sugar). #bpni #nutritioneducation #nlitehealth #iycf #poshanmaah #nutritionweek #letsraiseawareness #nlitedietstudio #BPNiIndia

☀ Our body needs iron to help move oxygen around our bodies. ☀ When our kids are getting enough iron from food, they will have plenty of energy for play and learning. ☀ When a kid’s body is not receiving enough iron from food, they may feel tired, irritable, lethargic, short of breath, appear pale, or experience headaches or dizziness. ☀ Your child’s food diary will show if they are eating enough iron from food. Iron Deficiency however, can only be diagnosed by blood test. The test result determines the right supplementation for your child. ☀ Your child may benefit from an iron supplement if they don’t eat animal products (meat, poultry, fish or eggs), iron-fortified cereals or breads, or plant-based sources including spinach, nuts, legumes. Supplements may also be helpful if your child drinks a lot of milk. To help the body absorb iron from plant-based foods, include vitamin C rich foods: ✔ a small glass of OJ or strawberries with cereal ✔ carrot and capsicum sticks with hummus ✔ kiwi fruit and spinach in a smoothie-style ice-block. ☀ We know that for some kiddos, exploring colourful and different flavours and textures can feel challenging. If exploring these foods with their senses doesn’t feel good right now, we encourage you to discuss alternate options with your Dietitian. Our Program team shared this clip of an open conversation with the recipients and users of our nutritional food packets in village in Chandan Block. It feels great to hear from these participants that the food packets are directly helping pregnant & lactating mothers, and other vulnerable groups in not just getting food for their plates but they also recognize the nutritional value and positive effects of the food they are consuming. Conversing directly with the participants in their own language/dialect is very helpful in getting frank views on various things from the end users. In this instance, the Head of the Program team is seen as talking to the villagers in their language. Due to this unfiltered dialog process, our team also received some very constructive comments and suggestions from the participants. For example, participants suggested that we could further enhance the value of the cooked food consumed by mothers by helping them grow vegetables and greens which they could use in preparing the meals. A project for community based #kitchengardens is underway now which will fit into this perfectly. #fieldvisit #feedbackloop #fieldassessment #communityparticipation #nutritionsecurity #communitynutrition
