At KidsMatter.charity, we are passionately dedicated to making a meaningful impact on the community through our initiative focused on removing judicial immunity for judges who fail to uphold the standards of their vital role. This critical campaign aims to foster a fair and just legal system where every individual's rights are protected, including the most vulnerable among us – our children. We believe that judges should bear accountability for their actions to ensure they act impartially and adhere to the highest ethical standards. Our objective is not to undermine the judiciary but to reinforce its integrity by advocating for reforms that prevent judicial misconduct. By challenging the status quo of judicial immunity, we seek to inspire a culture of transparency and responsibility within our courts. Our efforts include community education on the importance of judicial accountability, supporting legislative proposals for legal reform, and providing a platform for those affected by judicial overreach to share their stories. We stand committed to protecting the community's trust in our legal system and ensuring that justice serves the best interest of the people. Join us in this pursuit of justice and transformation within our legal framework by supporting our cause to remove judicial immunity from judges who do not honor the law or the people they serve.

Super interesting article - while the article talks about policy-making, I'd argue the points raised here apply to any social change effort. Whether you’re (part of) a legislative body, a non-profit, a university, or any other institution that purports to serve the public good, a couple of takeaways from John Maki’s piece are worth keeping in mind: 1. It is crucial to build relationships and, as fully as possible, understand the population you’re trying to serve. In my current role, I work not only with transfer students (a population that is very much under-served by the American higher education system), but with more niche, even further underserved populations within the transfer umbrella, including online learners, joint program students, non-degree students, post-baccalaureate/pre-med students, and veteran students. Each of those groups has its own specific needs that I constantly adapt to ensure they have the right resources and support. 2. It is important to consider not just what works in terms of the goal you’re trying to achieve (that goal could be reducing crime rates, recruiting more students, or increasing voter turnout as examples) - but also what advances the values you want to uphold and creates community. While everyone needs to work towards improving their bottom line, this shouldn't conflict with the imperative to improve people's lives or make your institution more inclusive. 3. There may indeed be consequences or challenges of a new initiative that you don’t expect - but that shouldn’t stop anyone from making change, nor does it mean that the change you made wasn't worth it. https://lnkd.in/gEcmpCD5

Social justice requires that all communities be safe, respected, and treated equitably. Safety is a fundamental human right, and no community can truly thrive without it. Ensuring the safety of all communities means addressing systemic inequalities and providing equal protection under the law. Equality in Protection: All communities must have equal access to law enforcement and justice. This means eliminating racial profiling, bias, and discrimination in policing and the judicial system. When every community is protected fairly, trust in these institutions can be restored and strengthened. Addressing Root Causes: Safety involves more than just protection from crime. It requires addressing the root causes of violence and insecurity, such as poverty, lack of education, inadequate healthcare, and housing instability. By tackling these issues, we create safer environments for everyone. Inclusive Policies: Social justice demands that policies be inclusive and consider the unique needs of diverse communities. This includes creating and enforcing laws that protect marginalized groups from hate crimes, domestic violence, and other forms of abuse. Community Empowerment: Empowering communities through education, economic opportunities, and social services ensures that people have the resources they need to feel secure. Cultural Sensitivity and Respect: Recognizing and respecting the cultural practices and identities of all communities is essential for creating a safe and inclusive society. Collaboration and Solidarity: Achieving social justice requires collaboration and solidarity among all communities. Text "Give Native" to 44-321 to support awareness initiatives like this. This week, Social Finance is focusing on children and young people. 👧🧒 In light of the upcoming King's Speech and the proposed national "truant register", it's clear that more needs to be done. While intended to track at-risk children, the truant register will potentially increase the burden on schools and miss the underlying safeguarding issues. We need a child-led, collaborative approach across the sectors to understand and act on the data that will ensure children are seen and safely supported. That’s why we’ve launched the Early Inclusion Collective (EIC), partnering with 15 organisations to transform child support systems to be safety-focused and inclusive. Our Missing Data Unit aims to identify and support children who are not visible in current data 🔍📊. Read our first blog, penned by Sara Jones and Nadine Smith (link in comments), in a two-part series to learn more about how we can work together to support our invisible children. Brighter Futures is a not-for-profit company providing children’s services in Reading. It’s wholly owned by Reading Council, which means that it’s unambiguously covered by FOI. In July, the Commissioner dealt with a messy and difficult FOI complaint from someone asking for data about a child protection meeting attended by their former partner. The DP complications of the case shouldn’t be underestimated but the request was still mishandled. The request was refused (quickly) without reference to FOI exemptions and an internal review request was ignored. The applicant complained to the Commissioner who asked the company to carry out a review. They also failed to respond to this, and only when the Commissioner said they’d accept the complaint without a review did the Council intervene. To be clear, the request was doomed. FOI wasn’t going to deliver them any information (what wasn’t data about someone else was about them). But that’s not the point. Some organisations have complex governance structures. I remember the head of one charitable trust l assisted loftily asserting that despite their legal ambiguity, they would abide by FOI as if they were covered. This position lasted precisely as long as it took for someone they didn’t like to ask them a question. Here, these are 2000 rules. You own it outright: it’s covered. If your organisation owns or has interests in companies, get it straight today. Are they covered? The answer for FOI and EIR might be different. If yes, choose one of two options. Either train them sufficiently to recognise FOIs then get them to hand them off to you (the public authority who knows how this works), or train them to a greater extent such that they can do it themselves. There is no mention of FOI anywhere on Brighter Futures’ website. This is surprising. I am not saying that nobody has considered this issue, but I am suggesting that the undoubtedly busy people at both the company and the council might need to think this through if the ICO’s intervention hasn’t already prompted that conversation. https://lnkd.in/e5iDCuAJ

I’m thrilled to announce the Urban Institute and the Microsoft Justice Reform Initiative are requesting proposals for the next round of the Catalyst Grant Program, due November 22. Check out the grant application website at https://lnkd.in/eV2dFqKb to learn more about the program and how to apply. We will also hold an informational webinar on October 16 for interested groups. The program provides #funding and technical assistance to #nonprofit organizations in the United States for local projects that use data and technology to advance racial #equity in the front-end of the adult criminal legal system. We are seeking project proposals that support policies, programs, and practices that prevent unnecessary system involvement and decrease racial and ethnic disparities in the front end of the criminal legal system. We look forward to receiving new ideas from groups seeking to use data and technology to accelerate equity and reform in the criminal legal system in their communities.
