Education Consultant| Teacher| Storyteller |Podcast Host| Speaking Coach- Empowering Professionals through Effective Communication
I grew up in the heart of Enerhen junction, surrounded by the vibrant sounds of Warri's distinct pidgin English. Pidgin was more than just a language; it was a cultural identity, a badge of honour for many in my community. But amidst the rhythmic cadences of pidgin. I also recognised the importance of mastering standard English for broader communication. Despite the prevalence of pidgin around me, I refused to let my environment limit my potential. While I embraced and celebrated the richness of pidgin, I understood the value of fluency in standard English for personal and professional growth. I even went as far as to study English Language and Literature in the higher institution. This exposure made me to recognise the beauty in both languages. My upbringing taught me that language is a tool- an instrument to bridge cultures, connect people, and express ideas. Today, when people hear me speak, they are often surprised to learn about my Warri roots. They don't expect someone from Enerhen Junction to articulate thoughts with clarity and precision in English. But I have learnt that our environment doesn't define us. We have the power to transcend our circumstances and become the architect of our own linguistic journey. In a world where effective communication is paramount, we mustn't allow ourselves to be constrained by the language of our surroundings. Instead, let us strive continuously to elevate our speaking and writing skills. Our voices matter, regardless of the language we speak. And by investing in our communication skills, we empower ourselves to share our stories and connect with others. So let's break free from the limitations of our environment by taking advantage of Get Polished training. Our early birds discount is still on. Educational Literacy Assistance and Training for Indonesian Migrant Children in Malaysia Reading, writing, and counting are basic abilities that every student must have, especially at the elementary school level. Based on the results of initial observations and direct interviews with relevant community organizations, children have limited skills and abilities in reading, writing, and arithmetic due to certain conditions. This service is here to assist and train children of Indonesian migrant descent who live in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This activity uses the foster sister method or approach, which includes reading, writing, and arithmetic assistance to improve the quality of human resources, especially in education. Thiseducational literacy training can improve people's standard of living. Thus, children have access to knowledge in the fields of education, technology, and information. “I think the first thing we must do is to stop chasing English language education in primary schooling, and go back to the mother tongue as the medium of instruction. Every study shows that children do better when taught in their mother tongue. At a policy level, all regional languages should be given 'national language' status just like Hindi, which is after all also a regional language. The second thing is that we need to teach children work ethic, as well as respecting dignity of labor, early in life so that they imbibe it into their very DNA. One can only learn when he respects the art and the artists of any specific work. The third thing is that I believe we need to establish a national service program just like Singapore, that brings together the youth of the country by cutting across caste, religious and linguistic divides, and these youth can have two years where they are taught civic sense, cleanliness and hygiene habits, soft skills, and also to promote national integration. The last and most important lessons might come from travelling. As part of this, the students should spend some of the time traveling the length and breadth of our country, as well as spend time in both rural and urban settings.” What are your opinions. From learner's perspective, there are 2 types of English: English as a Foreign Language, and English as a Second Language. The difference may be sheer one. But, consider this: you live in a country where English skill is not necessarily needed. You can speak the same language with people from your fellow country from East to West, North to South. And it's not English. Along the way, foreign people come, do business, visit tourist spots. Then English becomes necessary. Local people who learn this kind of English, is learning English as a Foreign Language. Consider another scenario, you live in a busy country. A business hub country, perhaps. Your mother tongue is not necessarily English, but it is a custom to speak English with your fellow people. This is where English is perceived as Second Language. Where I come from, English is a Foreign Language. My first job after I graduated my University in 1998, was actually teaching English. My students were mostly high school and college students. Although here in Indonesia, there are many foreigners, local people speak broken English. Of course, there are people speak fluent English. Some would even go further speaking English with fellow Indonesians, which does not make sense, since we are not actually English-as-Second-Language nation. Having worked in a multinational organization, I am quite grateful to be able to maintain my English skill. This skill also led me to work with foreigners. In my current position in a local bank, my superior, at times, would take me to meeting when there are foreigners in it. What about in your country? Is English a Second, or Foreign Language?
