TICK followed TOCK followed TICK followed TOCK followed TICK Today marks the 25th Anniversary of Guinness ’Surfer’ (1999) Directed by Jonathan Glazer “Back in 1999 no one was asking for a black and white ad with horses sharing a choppy sea with surf dudes soundtracked by electronic dance music and passages from Moby Dick. Why would they? There’s no frame of reference for it. The uncomfortable truth (for some) is people don’t know what they want until you give it to them. 'Surfer' is a film of instinct, emotion and gut feel born from inarguable logic. It’s not a film that’s trying to please people with what we think they want.” - Andy Jex, CCO, TBWA\London Happy St Patrick's Day! Sláinte! New Post: Every EGOT Winner & What They Won For - https://lnkd.in/g_x3-RZd - When Benj Pasek and Justin Paul won a Primetime Emmy on night 2 of the Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday (Sept. 8, 2024), they became EGOTs, having won at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony in competition. They won their Emmy for outstanding music and lyrics for a song they co-wrote for Only Murders in the Building. They co-wrote the song “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” with another songwriting team, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Only 21 people have achieved EGOT status, which has become the ultimate mic-drop move in show business. If the original idea of becoming an EGOT meant going to the very top in four distinct fields of entertainment, shortcuts have materialized to getting there, which has made the achievement more commonplace and less worthy of awe. The Tonys award producer credits far too liberally. Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Hudson won their Tony Awards for being among a platoon of producers of a winning Broadway show. Hudson was one of more than 40 producers on A Strange Loop. Her participation was announced the day before the show began previews in April 2022. It won the Tony two months later. And not all EGOT awards are equally easy or hard to get. There are currently just 23 categories at the Oscars and 26 at the Tony Awards. Far more awards are handed out at the Grammys (94 categories this year) and the Primetime Emmys (a whopping 123 categories this year, spread out over three nights). And that doesn’t even count the various other Emmy shows, such as the Daytime Emmys and the Children’s and Family Emmys. We mentioned earlier that the definition of EGOT is having won at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony in competition. There’s some debate about that. Six more individuals — Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli, James Earl Jones, Harry Belafonte, Quincy Jones and director/producer Frank Marshall — qualify if you count honorary or special awards. However, most EGOT experts don’t count non-competitive awards. The whole point is to have won the awards in competition. Here’s a comprehensive rundown on the competitive winners’ road to EGOT. - #news #business #world #jobs #school #passion

Spent my Saturday night collecting for Biko’s #AfroSexyCool party. While swiping cards, making change and wrapping wristbands for two deboarded party buses of tipsy folks in about a 2 foot space, I heard the MC say it was one of the cohosting DJ’s debut. I’ve been working doors for Biko for at least 6 years. I know how much he does to maintain his brand but the joint chaos and beauty of that moment reminded me how business-minded you have to be to be a creative. Biko had a brand new DJ alongside a world-touring DJ. He makes all his graphics, tshirts and visuals. He builds relationships with venues/bars to better ensure profitability. He partners with deeply impactful institutions in the region. And he keeps the people he works with paid. Creatives do it all - the artisty and theatrics, the logistics, the bookkeeping and projections, the people-advocacy. I talked to a few artists after the event and they expressed their love of the beauty and chaos of entertainment and the arts. Many of them have 9to5s but feel stuck and small there - it’s just something they have to do. I get called a creative often and I always reject the label. My line is: I am creative (adj) but not ‘a creative’ (noun). I realize my hesitation in being called a creative has less to do with learning new tools or assuming a title I deeply respect in others. It’s more about my fear of being stifled. Creatives use both sides of the brain to not just make things cool/pretty but to give cool, pretty things measurable reach and impact. To put creatives into one or the other small box is a detriment to the progress of cities, companies, and most importantly to the creative. If you give creatives the mic, not just on the stage but also in the boardroom, they may surprise you by being exactly who they are.

New Post: Mick Management Doesn’t Just Represent Artists – It’s in the ‘World-Building’ Business - https://lnkd.in/gVjGa_Mp - Given the multitude of distribution, streaming, promotion and marketing options and expectations, the business of becoming an established artist has turned into a seriously heavy lift for music acts and their managers. It’s one reason that Mick Management partner Jonathan Eshak says, “We don’t like to refer to ourselves as a management company anymore. We’re a music company. What we do more than anything else is brand development, artist development — world-building … We’re not just trying to keep the train on the tracks.” Eshak and his partner, Michael McDonald, the company’s founder, got into management after immersing themselves in other sectors of the business. McDonald served as Dave Matthews Band’s tour manager before co-founding ATO Records in 2000 with Matthews; his manager, Red Light founder Coran Capshaw; and Chris Tetzeli, who went on to start 7S Management. He opened Mick the following year with John Mayer as one of his first clients and, in 2004, brought on data savant Eshak, who worked at Universal Music Publishing Group (and is the twin brother of Island Records co-CEO Justin Eshak). Jonathan became a partner in 2015. Related Vector Management President Jason Murray on the Company's 360-Degree Approach, Americana Successes… 07/19/2024 With a staff of approximately 20 in New York, Los Angeles and Nashville, the duo has built a boutique firm — with its own record label, Mick Music, distributed by Believe — that represents Maggie Rogers, who released the critically praised Don’t Forget Me in April; Leon Bridges and Ray LaMontagne, who will both release albums later this year; The Walkmen and the solo career of their frontman, Hamilton Leithauser; Sharon Van Etten; Brett Dennen; Mandy Moore; My Morning Jacket; and The Marias. In a fragmented culture where “it’s very hard to find water-cooler moments,” according to Eshak, Mick’s team excels in building committed fan bases for a roster of individualistic artists who punch above their weight. “Artists all define success differently, and we understand that,” he adds. “We understand that there’s no one way of doing it anymore.” Their bespoke approach has resulted in some notable recent successes. In August, Rogers will embark on an international arena tour — including two shows at Madison Square Garden — though she has yet to achieve platinum sales with an album. In 2018, Leithauser began a five-night residency at the swank, 100-capacity Café Carlyle in New York, playing to “a few die-hard Walkmen fans

"Maybe it’s the cooler weather, the diminishing daylight, or the fact that we’ve sniffed so much nutmeg and cinnamon it’s infiltrated our brain. But in the fall, things tend to get weird. "From Maine to California, we not only carve pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns but we also turn them into boats and attempt to bob down rivers. We debate the existence of ghosts and sasquatches and use worms to predict the weather. We put our pups—and any other pets that will let us—in costumes, and grow our leg hairs out to resemble tarantulas. Or at least, some of us do. Anything goes at these fifteen wacky fall festivals, and that's the fun of it." This is a popular event in Maine: "The North American Wife Carrying Championship" Apparently the sport of wife carrying began in Finland, sparked by a legend where a robber would steal both food and women from the towns he pillaged. Naturally, we have adopted this and turned it into an extreme sport. The 23rd Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship tasks competitors with carrying their significant others through a dry and muddy 278-yard obstacle course, either fireman-style (over the shoulder), piggyback, or the most popular: the Estonian Carry (flipped upside-down with legs around the runner’s shoulders). If you’re in it to win, it helps to have a partner with heft. The winning team scores the wife's weight in beer and five times her weight in cash. https://lnkd.in/eqym8NcM
