Advancements in Neonatology Procedures: Elevating Newborn Care Neonatology has made significant strides over the years, and today's procedural innovations are transforming the care we provide to our tiniest patients. From the early identification of congenital disorders to the advanced respiratory support systems, each breakthrough brings us closer to ensuring every newborn has the best possible start in life. One key area of development is the improvement in minimally invasive procedures, which reduce the stress and potential complications for neonates. These advancements not only enhance recovery but also allow for better long-term outcomes. Procedures such as peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) lines, and non-invasive respiratory support methods like high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy are now more refined and safer, thanks to continuous research and innovation. Furthermore, the integration of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) has revolutionized diagnostic accuracy and procedural guidance. This technology enables clinicians to make real-time decisions with greater precision, thereby improving overall patient care. Published with European Journal of Pediatrics: "Central nervous system tumours in neonates: what should the neonatologist know?" Neonatal CNS tumours are rare and differ in their clinical presentation, location, histological characteristics, neuroradiological features, and prognosis from #tumours occurring later in childhood. Their prognosis is usually poor above all because of the limited therapeutic options. 🔬 Dive into the latest in neonatal research with our delayed Christmas surprise: a paper on surfactant strategies for preterm infants in respiratory distress, published on 27.12.2023 in Acta Paediatrica (Q1 - Medicine - Pediatrics, Perinatology and Child Health). Using an innovative electromechanical lung simulator (xPULM) paired with premature sheep lungs, we explore positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) variations and surfactant delivery methods during spontaneous breathing. Results showcase significant tidal volume increases with both bolus and nebulized surfactant delivery, revealing no methodological preference. Post-surfactant administration, higher PEEP levels exhibit positive impacts. Although the xPULM proves its worth, additional research with larger lung populations is necessary to address the difficulties in lung water resorption of premature sheep lungs.
