BPUB Announces 7th Street Closure as Downtown Project Begin The Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) announces the closure of Seventh Street between Elizabeth Street and Levee Street beginning Monday, July 15 through July 29 as excavation begins for the American Rescue Plan Act Downtown (ARPA) Water/Wastewater Improvements Project. Motorists are advised to plan their routes in advance and follow all posted detour signs.   The work will be completed in two phases: 1. The first phase will focus on wastewater improvements in the alleyways between Elizabeth Street, Levee Street, St. Charles Street and St. Francis Street with an estimated completion date of December 2024. 2. The second phase will address wastewater improvements in the alleyways between Adams Street, Washington Street and Elizabeth Street, as well as water line improvements between 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th streets to be completed by summer of 2025.   To minimize disruptions, alleyways will be closed off in segments as work progresses. 🌟 Exciting Infrastructure Development in D.C.! 🌟 CBNA and Halmar have been awarded an $819 million contract by DC Water to construct the Potomac River Tunnel, the largest project in the authority's history. This 5.5-mile tunnel is a major component of the Clean Rivers Project, a $2.99 billion initiative aimed at improving water quality in the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers and Rock Creek. 🔹 The PRT will significantly reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to the Potomac River by 93% during typical rainfall years, enhancing water quality and environmental sustainability. 🔹 The 18-foot-diameter tunnel will traverse beneath Georgetown, West Potomac Park, and the National Mall, connecting to the existing Anacostia River Tunnel. 🔹 Timeline: Construction is set to begin in 2024, with completion expected by early 2030. This project not only underscores the importance of sustainable infrastructure but also highlights the commitment to improving the quality of life for residents and preserving natural resources. Consultation on potential circumstances where digging may continue beyond the locate validity period without having to request a new locate. Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery would like your input on the development of a potential regulation that would prescribe circumstances where digging may continue after the expiration of the locate validity period. As specified in the Ontario Underground Infrastructure Notification System Act, 2012 (One Call Act), once a locate has passed its validity period a new locate must be obtained in order to continue to dig. MPBSD is proposing to address stakeholder requests for more efficiencies in the locate delivery system to support the timely completion of construction projects, while maintaining public safety. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, wooden pipes were a common solution for water distribution and sewage systems. These pipes were durable and relatively easy to install, made from hollowed-out logs, often of cedar or elm. Cities like Boston, New York, and Philadelphia relied on wooden pipes to support their growing populations. Philadelphia alone installed over 200,000 LF of wooden pipes by the early 1830s.| During this time, firefighting brigades faced the challenge of accessing water quickly during fires. They would dig down to the wooden water mains and use a hand auger to drill a hole into the pipe, allowing water to fill an earthen basin for use. After extinguishing the fire, they would seal the hole with a wooden plug, marking the spot for future use. This practice led to the term "fire plug." Did you know that Aaron Burr, better known for his infamous duel with Alexander Hamilton, founded New York City's first water system using wooden pipes? In 1799, Burr established the Manhattan Company to provide clean water to the city. However, a clause in the company's charter allowed it to use surplus capital for other purposes, which Burr cleverly used to start a bank. This bank eventually evolved into JPMorgan Chase, one of the largest financial institutions in the world. From a modern utilities infrastructure perspective, the use of wood for sewer and water pipes might seem odd, especially given advanced materials like HDPE and steel and ever-advancing slipforming techniques. Many wood pipes transported water reliably for over 100 years, a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of early engineers.
