It was great to see in this #EuCNC keynote a shift from the “plug-and-play” of AI into wireless networks and more focus towards how wireless networks and 6G can actually contribute to AI. Indeed, wireless today is “passive” when it comes to AI-native networks and that is not enough for both “wireless” and “AI”. To become more “active”, wireless networks should contribute back to AI by feeding the 6G network’s capabilities (e.g., sensing) to solve AI’s problems to pave the way for a new generation of wireless and AI systems. One promising technique is through designing world models and experiences for AI—something that we, as a wireless community, excel at but have not leveraged for next-generation AI yet. Evidently, we can see how this converges with the main vision of Yann LeCun for next-generation AI as highlighted in the keynote I mentioned by Wen Tong at the EuCNC & 6G Summit. In fact, our recent breakthrough work in AGI-native networks (https://lnkd.in/ewGJJPv3) is the first to acknowledge and expand Yann’s vision thereby presenting the first, rigorous path for transforming “AI-native wireless” to “Wireless-native AI” – the next big thing in beyond 6G. For instance, the concept of ISAC that we were among the first to leverage in our work merged with other wireless techniques like digital twins, and combined with reasoning, planning, and common sense is the true gateway for artificial general intelligence (AGI) to emerge within the context of communication networks. Although this EuCNC keynote was very interesting, it would have been rather perfect if we were to see a complete story that “acknowledges” some of “our” crucial contributions that were somewhat seminal in this space, but rather missing from the picture. The NeuroSoC Project: Advancing Edge AI with Ubotica. The rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its expansion into edge and end devices have spurred research into highly energy-efficient, low-latency computing paradigms, such as In-Memory Computing (IMC).
