Here’s something I wish all early-stage climate tech startups understood: Building a brand is a quadrant 2 task. Important — but often it doesn’t feel urgent. Once you’ve gone to market, it’s easy to prioritize: 🚨 Responding to customer requests 🚨 Outbound sales & paid advertising 🚨 Additional fundraising rounds Because these activities tie to short-term cash flow. But early on, the most successful climate tech brands also: 🔮 Invested in additional tech & services to attract big players 🔮 Prioritized design, messaging, PR, & content production 🔮 Hired premium, culture-aligned talent In other words, they prioritized brand-building activites. Outside of messaging & content, I’m no expert in these areas. But I do know it’s human nature to postpone the “important but not urgent” projects. Which big one is your company putting off?

As the New Year picks up steam, we're looking to add our first non-founder engineer to work alongside Michael Gerbush. While we're happy to share more specifics, at a high level, our search will be focused on: Stage fit: We're just getting going. It takes a special kind of crazy to want to dive into the very earliest days of startup building, but for those of us who love that chaos, it's the only place to be. Finding the right fit on this front is critical for both sides. Mission Alignment: As extended families across the globe grow less and less connected with each passing decade as they become more geographically dispersed, Kinsome seeks to strengthen intergenerational bonds within families and start to reverse this dangerous trend. If revitalizing extended family bonds doesn't resonate, we're not a good fit. Skills fit: We're too early to be overly focused on specific previous experiences or even specific skills. Like most of the world, we believe AI is unlocking incredible new capabilities, and the Kinsome product vision relies heavily on this wave of recent innovation. We need an engineer who enjoys learning new technologies and is eager to try a lot of different things. We're interested in assessing a candidate's attitude about and aptitude for taking on an ever-evolving set of new challenges. Risk Tolerance: As an angel-backed startup, compensation will skew towards equity compared to the broader tech market. A willingness and ability to bet on our collective ability to build something great is a necessity. Climate tech startups can't just hire 'smart people'. I read this in today's Sifted newsletter. I couldn't agree more. Coming from an electronics engineering background before moving to software product development, I know the difference in work experience and how much training one needs to work on complex infrastructure and science-based projects compared to a SaaS application. In the coming months, VCs and investors will pay more attention to climate-tech startups' advisory board and leadership team profiles.
