At the Agder-India Business Seminar, we had the opportunity to converse with Goa's Fisheries Minister, honorable Mr. Nilkanth Halarnkar, and the Fisheries Director, Dr. Sharmila Monterio. We talked about how Goa's investment in innovative technologies is key to enhancing its role in India's aquaculture production. The event was a gateway to exploring new India-Agder partnership opportunities, aimed at transforming the fisheries industry.

Marine fisheries and aquaculture are critical for the economies of many countries in Africa 🌍, particularly least developed countries and small island developing states. Developing countries’ exports of fisheries and aquaculture processed products now account for 53% of the global share. These countries have also made significant strides in value addition within their industries. A new UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) report examines possible avenues for growth, diversification, cooperation, value addition and enabling actions to ensure a sustainable ocean economy. Did you wake up one day asking yourself: Where is the global fisheries & aquaculture market going? Well, you're in luck - FAOs latest flagship report on aquaculture makes some predictions 1. Growth of global capacity expected at average of 3million tons p.a. for the next 10 years 2. Merely all of that to be in aquaculture, while capture fisheries remain flat 3. To retain current levels of consumption 22% more supply is needed globally by 2050 What does that mean for sustainable and impact investments? A tonne of RAS production capacity is about EUR 30-35k in capex, meaning an investment need of some 100bn p.a. for the next 10 years. With sufficient demand and the right policies such investment can be primarily sustainable. Our bet at aquamarine - impact capital partners is on sustainable aquaculture tech and working hard to be a meaningful part of this wave. #sustainableaquaculture #impactinvestments

In his recent report to the Human Rights Council, the Special rapporteur on the right to food Micheal Fakhri "strongly recommends that States exercise great caution around aquaculture. For aquaculture to be socially, economically and environmentally viable, a robust regulatory regime is required". He also points at "a high risk that aquaculture could serve growing consumption rates but create larger, more complex problems as a result." "Generally there’s less VC money out there at the moment, which has led to many companies having lower valuations, but our portfolio is still doing OK and still hitting their targets, which is very positive. We expect to have some very positive updates in the coming weeks." Hatch co-founder and managing director, Carsten Krome has spent over a decade in marine investment and has some takeaways on how to proceed into the albeit flawed but choice alternative to food security. The tough truth is that there is always room for improvement. Read more on his experience in #aquaculture #startupfunding and #venturecapital at The Fish Site: https://lnkd.in/ezn6U7sG
While 2023 might have resulted in a number of impressive achievements for Hatch Blue, its co-founder has been underwhelmed by the pace at which the aquaculture industry has been adopting innovation and believes it will be up to five years before many of the most exciting developments in the industry really start to fulfil their promise. Last year, I had the chance to explore New Zealand’s impressive aquaculture scene and learn about their farming practices firsthand. Fast forward to today, and with Canada and New Zealand making big (but very different!) moves in aquaculture, I’m reflecting on how these decisions are shaping the industry. 🌍✨ In my latest, I dissect two recent decisions made be each government: 🇳🇿New Zealand’s announcement to extend its offshore aquaculture licenses for 20 years 🇨🇦Canada’s announcement to ban open-net pen salmon farming in British Columbia over the next 5 years What’s driving these decisions? A lot of it is coming from public opinion. In Canada, skepticism about open-net pen salmon farming has led to a ban by 2029, challenging industry growth. Meanwhile, New Zealand's positive view on sustainable aquaculture has resulted in extended licenses and robust industry growth. These differences show how public perception can either support or hinder aquaculture development. Discover more about how these dynamics are shaping the future of the industry in our latest article. Curious about how these contrasts play out? Click the link to dive deeper! 👇 https://lnkd.in/gYPfn9Dt
