Blending style with flavor. The emerging trend of mixing fashion and food is a fascinating evolution in lifestyle branding that speaks to a more holistic approach to experience. Couple of ideas from my side. Experiential Dining and Dressing: Restaurants and fashion brands are collaborating to offer themed dining experiences where the décor, staff uniforms, and even the guests' suggested attire are coordinated to create a unique ambiance. This can transform a meal into a themed event, making both the fashion and the food part of a memorable experience. Fashion-Inspired Menus: Some chefs are taking inspiration from fashion collections to craft menus that reflect the aesthetics and themes of the clothing. This could mean designing dishes that mimic the colors, textures, and shapes seen in the fashion pieces, offering a visual and gastronomic reflection of the apparel. Co-Branded Events and Products: Events that feature both new culinary delights and fashion lines are becoming more popular, providing an avenue for both industries to launch new products simultaneously. This collaboration can also extend to co-branded merchandise, such as aprons designed by fashion houses or chef shoes made by popular apparel brands. Food and fashion for thoughts.

Although the rules of dressing aren’t nearly as strict nowadays as they were in, say, the 1950s and 60s, there are still some guidelines that continue to be important to this day. Specifically, and unsurprisingly, these guidelines often apply to the workplace, whether they’re dictated by corporate standards or if you simply want to blend in alongside your coworkers. This is where business casual attire comes in, a style of dress that can be worn in the workplace. But what is the definition of “business casual,” exactly? And how do you pull off the look?

Did Work-From-Home and Casual Fridays Kill Tailoring? Short answer: No. Long answer: Well, kind of... It’s true that fewer people are investing in expensive suits, and the days of every town having a local tailor where everyone got their clothes made are long gone. (Primark wasn’t always around!) But did Casual Fridays kill the suit? Not really. Everyone was still suited up Monday through Thursday, so one day a week didn’t do much damage. However, it did shift attitudes towards the classic two-piece. The power dressing era of the '80s and '90s, with bold pinstripes, oversized shoulders, and sharp-pointed shoes, is over—and I admit, I miss it. Then came COVID. Tailors, myself included, had to pivot. Many of us found ourselves sewing scrubs. If you’ve got the equipment, why not put it to good use? But post-COVID, I’ve seen a shift. People are willing to invest in quality clothing again, partly driven by concerns over fast fashion and its environmental impact, as well as the unethical practices behind it. This has led to more conscious decisions in how people shop for fashion. Since then, we’ve been creating a lot more casual pieces—still beautifully tailored—but we’re evolving with the customer base, rather than clinging to a shrinking suit market. Uniforms create a sense of authority and reliability, making guests feel comfortable and confident in the service they will receive. Functional Efficiency: In the hotel and catering industry, uniforms are often designed to be functional, helping staff perform their duties more efficiently. For example, chefs wear specific clothing for safety and hygiene, while servers’ uniforms may include pockets for carrying orders. Team Unity and Morale: Uniforms foster a sense of belonging and unity among staff, which can boost morale and teamwork. When everyone dresses according to the same standard, it promotes equality and collaboration, which translates into better service for guests. Attention to Detail: Sophisticated clothing suggests that the establishment pays attention to even the smallest details. This attention to detail is often reflected in other aspects of the service, such as the quality of food, the cleanliness of the environment, and the level of personalized care provided to guests. Client Shopping Excursions - The Do's and Don'ts Quite frankly the shopping trip excursions are the most fun part of the personal styling service (Shh don't tell anyone) A few reasons for this are that you get to see your client's face light up when you find things that match their personal styling goals. You help them break limiting beliefs they had about shopping. You get to engage in meaningful conversations about fashion that often transition into other types of conversations. But, let's not get carried away. The Do's & Don'ts of the client shopping excursion... DO: 𝗘𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗢𝗻: The fitting room is your friend! Don't settle for just looking at clothes on hangers. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆: Have a plan for the stores you'll visit and how much time you'll spend at each. Be mindful of the client's energy levels and take breaks when needed. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝗙𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘀𝘂𝗹𝗲: Help your client visualize complete outfits by curating a selection of pieces that work together. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗕𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲: Pay attention to your client's reactions and adjust your approach accordingly. 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀: Elevate your service by showing different ways to wear a piece. DON'T: 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝗵: Give your client time to explore and make thoughtful decisions. 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀: Listen to your client's opinions, even if you disagree. Nowadays, it is commonly said that we live in a world where it's “all about the looks”. And this, of course, also gets into food: Have you ever heard about Food Styling? Recently, I was looking some info about Food Art, as this week we will publish a (fascinating) conversation with a food artist. My idea was doing a post talking about how art and food are deeply intertwined. But looking about food artists, Google decided to give me results about “food stylists”. For those who have never heard the concept before, a food stylist is a professional that prepares food in a way that looks photogenic for the media: magazines, menus, TV, social media… Or a shorter definition would be: “They make food look more delicious so you buy it” I do not tend to diminish the work that food stylists do. Certainly, you need a certain sense of design and aesthetics, as well as photography/video knowledge in order to make something look beautiful. But I do have a little something against them: the ethics. Fritz Klug, a communication professional who is close to the world of food styling, wrote a beautiful essay about the ethics within the food styling, evaluating the techniques employed in the media regarding 4 parameters: - Equity: the message should be fair and not manipulated. - Creativity: the work should be clever, fun and memorable. - Authenticity: the work should be upright, sincere and genuine. - Truthfulness: the work should be open, factual, and easy to defend. In addition, he classified the techniques employed by food stylists in three categories: - Enhance: Using media techniques and setting to capture the best image. - Stretch: Modify the preparation to obtain better results in terms of looks. - Cheat: Directly using other products in place of what is being sold. Ethically wise, the first category we can take it as the one that fits better within the parameters, but in the other we are already talking about changing what is being eaten. Actually, in the case of cheating, we are talking about: - Spraying hairspray in fruit to give more shine. - Pumping soap into a pint of bear to create stable foam. - Using glue instead of milk so the cereals do not get soggy. - Using motor oil instead of syrup so the pancake does not absorb it. Of course, in the end these cases are extreme (although not occasional) and we cannot judge all food stylists the same way. In addition, that their job is more or less ethical does not mean that needs to be stopped. But their existence is the clear sign that we need a more transparent food industry, that is not afraid to show their products as they are.
