Check out the latest blog post from my HayDay Services partner, Amanda Day. Raise your hand if you’ve ever been frustrated because a funder website: ▪️ Sent you round and round but never gave you information on their grant funding process ▪️ Shared who they awarded grants to, but never gave information on their grant application process ▪️ Told you they have shut down their open application process while they are conducting a new strategic planning process ▪️ Hid the fact that they don’t accept unsolicited proposals, wasting your precious time reading a million other things before stumbling on that tidbit ▪️ Did not share any contact information ▪️ Provided a list of Frequently Asked Questions that don’t answer a single question you have about their grant funding process Now that you’re raising your hand, know you’re not alone. In January, I joined Boyd Grants as their part-time Research Specialist, and since then I’ve been knee deep in grant prospect research projects. And let me tell you, the more I dig, the more I wish funders would understand the work of grant seekers. If I could wave my magic wand and “fix” a few things, these would be at the top of my list. During a recent vacation I reconnected with a very successful friend from college. We discussed #corporate #board #service as a next step in his career, and he shared some thoughts on how to go about that I believe missed the mark (e.g., nonprofit as a stepping stone). Here is an article on some best practices and wisdom collected from past interviews on board service, which includes links within to the complete series. #business https://lnkd.in/eYmxj5gC

This year we invested nearly $3 million in community-based organizations as well as coaching and other support—about a third of our budget. This ranged from stipends for steering committee members in programs like RainReady and Civic Innovation Hub to covering costs for specialized services like legal, marketing, and real estate consulting in Elevated Works to collaborative grant projects and consulting fees for user testing of online tools. #GivingTuesday

Over the years, I've picked up so many little pieces of insight from funders by speaking to them on the phone, which simply weren't available on their website. Such as: "We've already received several good applications for similar causes in the current funding round - you might be better off submitting it next quarter instead." "Our website doesn't say much about what to include in a funding proposal, but at the moment I know our trustees are particularly keen to see <insert here>." Often, a quick call to a funder can help you to gain insights that give you an advantage in the application process, or ensure that someone on the inside will be looking out for your application, ready to put in a good word on your behalf. Let's be clear - this is an unfair process and counter-productive to the aim of funding the work that has the greatest social impact. But it happens every day, and undeniably give some applicants - who have established relationships with funders, or know how to "play the system" to get the information they need - a clear advantage. Many of us (me included) don't particularly enjoy phoning funders, but it's definitely worth it. I try to make sure I have one good question lined up - which I know isn't clearly answered on their website - as a reason for calling, then use this as a starting point for a broader conversation, if they're willing. Next time you're thinking twice about whether to phone a funder, give it a go. Hopefully you can use my blog (link in the comments) as a helpful guide.

Whew! Tuesday, I kicked off a 4-part email series called “Actionable Tips for Better Grant Writing,” and it was 🔥! Here are a few quick tips for a successful grant proposal: 1. Understand Funder Priorities: Research potential funders to ensure alignment with their philanthropic goals. 2. Define the Project: Clearly state the problem or opportunity your project addresses. 3. Craft a Compelling Narrative: Tell a clear, engaging story that underscores the importance of your work and its alignment with the funder’s mission. 4. Demonstrate Sustainability: Show how your project will create lasting change and outline your strategy for sustainability beyond the initial funding. 5. Show Impact: Use data and research to illustrate how your project will make a concrete difference. 6. Budget with Precision: Present a detailed, realistic budget that accounts for every dollar of the funding. 7. Foster Funder Relationships: Keep funders updated, building trust and opening doors for future support. 📝 Actionable Tip: Start drafting a project summary that includes these elements. This exercise will help crystallize your thoughts and serve as a building block for your full proposal. Want to join in on the fun? Click the link in the comments (or my bio for my folks on IG and FB) to join us next week! I promise the juice will be worth the squeeze!
