Happy National Road Trip Day! We have several summer road trips planned for this summer so Andrew can attend college soccer ID sessions. We will visit Chicago, IL; Tulsa, OK; Louisville, KY; and Akin, SC. These trips will also help him cross off at least 2 more states from his bucket list of eating ice cream in every state. I think at the end of the summer he will have crossed off 28 states. Do you love road trips? WHEREVER YOU GO, THERE YOU ARE It’s time to get out of Dodge. It’s time to get away from 80+ consecutive days of 100F-degree (38C) heat in Phoenix and head for the cooler country. We’re packing up the car and going to the high country for several days. (Earworm warning) No phone, no pool, no pets. And never any cigarettes. There are many places to camp, ditching the Sonoran Desert summer heat at 1,300 feet (398m) and heading for the 6,000- to 7,000-foot (1,829-2,286m) elevations close to home. The forecast calls for 80s (27C) during the day and 60sF (16C) overnight compared to Phoenix’s 110s (43C) during the day and 90s (32C) overnight. It makes you want to change thermometers to Centigrade. The destination will be chosen by flipping a coin onto a paper map of the Southwest. It could be red rock country in southern Utah, the dramatic ridges on the Mogollon Rim, the lush forest of the White Mountains or rivers and wolves in the Blue Range. Most are just a three-hour ride. Wherever we go, there we’ll be. The best part is that no monsoons are forecasted for the week. We’ll be watching the full moon rise somewhere on Monday.
