I'm happy to announce an internal transition of my position at Rights and Resources Initiative. During the second half of 2024, I will be transitioning fully to the RRI Gender Justice program, and we will be recruiting a new director of Latin America program in the coming months. I will be present to support as advisor. Since 2020 I was entrusted to resume the leadership of the global Gender Justice program, which has meant that I have been fulfilling a dual role since then at two different scales. It has been an enormous task and with satisfaction I can see that this effort is creating strong roots and fruits that need greater attention. There is great potential that needs to be expanded and consolidated in the Gender Justice program. All this thanks to the effort we are developing with the grassroots women's movement of Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendants and local communities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. In 2009, I came to RRI to expand and strength the RRI coalition in Latin America. I must say that it has been a road full of personal and professional satisfaction for the mere fact of having been able to travel this time and geography in the company of many grassroots organizations, leaders from communities and crucial allies. The road is still long with many points to consolidate and adjust. The challenges we have encountered, we have overcome them together and the doors that seemed never to open, we have managed to unbolt them. We have a regional coalition of mostly community-based organizations representing the diversity of peoples and women and youth in Latin America and the Caribbean; we have valuable allies from national and international non-governmental organizations accompanying us, research centers and academia contributing with their expertise to the organized movement of communities and Indigenous and Afro-descendant Peoples and local communities, as well as organizations and groups of women and youth throughout the region. We have established long-term vision and agendas in defense of community land and territorial rights. We have set many milestones of change that are producing enormous results. Honoring the resilience and courage of those who suffered under the brutal legacy of slavery. On this International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, let us reflect on our past to build a better future. An important way to counter racism with justice is to acknowledge the foundational dignity, equality, and rights of people of African descent within our communities, institutions, policies, laws, and governing bodies. Together, we stand against injustice and commit to creating a more inclusive and equitable society. #EndSlavery #RemembranceDay #JusticeForAll #SocialJustice #AntiRacist #AntiRacism #RacialEquity #Freedom #HumanRights #Allyship #ConnectedCommunity #Equality #Diversity #Inclusion #Solidarity #Activism #UnityInDiversity #EndRacism #EqualRights #Unite #RacialJustice #Toronto #NorthYork #Willowdale #Ontario #Canada #TOPoli

Join us as we commemorate #Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, a pivotal moment in American history that embraces a commitment to equality for all. This day not only honours the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States but also serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial equity and social justice. While Juneteenth is rooted in American history, its principles resonate universally and are relevant to all who value democracy, citizenship, and self-determination. Here's what Juneteenth stands for: Democracy - Celebrating the fundamental right of all individuals to be free. Citizenship - Emphasizing access to basic civil liberties, including the ability to participate in the democratic process. Self-Determination - Affirming a person's ability to have agency over their own life. We invite our friends across the pond and everyone around the world to join us in recognising and celebrating Juneteenth. Let’s come together to honour the past and work towards a future where equality and justice are realities for all. #RideForFreedom #EndModernSlavery #freedomday #freedom #happyjuneteenth #futureequality #commitmenttoequality #socialjustice #stopexploitation

Have you ever wondered who the Chagossians are? The Chagossian are a community with a poignant history, characterised by resilience in the face of systemic injustices. What is the history of the Chagossian? In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the British government forcibly expelled the Chagossian people from their homeland, the Chagos Archipelago, to establish a military base on Diego Garcia. This act of displacement has left deep scars on their identity, culture, and community. Who are the Chagossian? The Chagossian are predominantly black people. They are a small, marginalised community deprived of their homeland and cultural heritage, facing educational challenges due to socio-economic hardships from their displacement. What is their current demographic situation? The indigenous Chagossian are now very few, mostly aged between 65 and 100 years old. Fewer than 350 of these original islanders remain. Their descendants, around 10,000, live mainly in Mauritius, Seychelles, the UK, and a few in Europe. How are they treated in British society? Despite the UK's commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, the Chagossian find themselves excluded. They constantly fight for their rights and recognition, striving to be seen as equals in a society that often overlooks them. What can we do to support them? Awareness is the first step. Educate yourself and others about their plight. Support organisations like ours advocating for their rights. Amplify their voices through social media. Push for policy changes addressing their grievances. Recognise their struggle for equality and inclusion, and support efforts to ensure they are treated with dignity and respect. #HumanRights #SocialJustice #Equality #Diversity #Inclusion #IndigenousRights #Chagossians #ColonialHistory #Geopolitics #Advocacy #CommunitySupport #FightforJustice
