I hire for culture first, and skills second. Regardless of the position: - a technician - a specialist - an admin I’m always looking for whether they have the personality and aptitudes that would be a good fit for our culture. - Will they work hard? - Will they treat our clients well? - Will they go the extra mile in service delivery? - Do they love to have fun? Skills are dependent on the position. Some skills are caught on the job, and some skills are taught (meaning they need to know before joining us). For example: an admin isn’t going to have to need a lot of experience or skills pre-hire. A technician on the other hand, better come with the skills and experience to get the job done. Hiring can be difficult, but if you have your values and what you’re looking for determined beforehand, it makes the process so much easier. Do you hire for skills or for culture? If both, how do they relate to each other?

"We extended an offer to him yesterday and were hoping to have an answer by now. We're looking for someone in this role who is decisive, maybe he's not the right person for us." 🙄 Unless you're hiring for a bomb squad technician, having a candidate take a few days to respond on an offer should be seen as an overwhelmingly positive reflection of their decision-making ability. Changing jobs is one of the most impactful and life-altering decisions that we make throughout our lives. For someone to give an instant answer on such a substantial decision, I would seriously question how much thought they're going to put into menial work tasks. When extending offers, provide a MINIMUM of 2-3 business days for a response. Anything less than that and I'd start to question the company's decision making much more than the candidate's. #HappyHunting

Great job for a journalist seeking to tell stories about working-class people who "defy stereotypes about who they are" every single day. What George Goehl is doing at Addition, and has done throughout his career as an organizer extraordinaire, to broaden the bigger “We” is absolutely essential. His podcast series "To See Each Other" features incredible stories that prove over and over that we shouldn't presume, assume, and most importantly, give up on people. I wish more news orgs would take this lead to tell the more complex, and authentic, stories about working-class people.

We’re not trying to catch people out. We’re just seeing who’s got good attention to detail… Now, you may have seen we’re hiring again at Sharper. Whoop. Yay. Zut Alors. Etc. And if you read a Sharper job spec (and I mean REALLY read it) you may notice something. Something a bit different. Within every Sharper job spec you will find a hidden code word. (Ask any of the Sharperinos. They’ll know what theirs was). And when someone applies for the role, if they pass the first CV/profile review, we’ll ask them what that code word is. If they don’t know (or have no idea what we’re on about) then sorry. No matter how good a match on paper the hiring train stops there. Now, you may think this odd. You may think it weird. You may even think it a bit cruel. (You’re obviously wrong too, but I still like you). But what we’re actually doing is weeding out those people who haven’t actually read the spec and are probably just applying because it vaguely matches what they’re looking for. But we don’t want vague matches. We want people who believe in what we do and want to join the good ship Sharper for the long haul. We want people who pay attention, have a keen eye for detail, and react positively to taking a different approach. And the code word helps us do that. So the code word - which is generally either an animal or a food - will remain. So if you’re applying for a role at Sharper anytime soon make sure you READ that job spec.

What Gets you out of bed in the morning? Everyone has their own personal motivation that gets them out of bed in the morning. For some, it may be the excitement of starting a new day and the opportunities it may bring. For others, it may be the responsibility of taking care of loved ones or fulfilling work obligations. For me, its the feeling of doing well in my role and opportunity to interact with a diverse range of individuals. Working as a desktop technician allows me to communicate with people from various departments and backgrounds, which helps me further develop my interpersonal skills. This sense of value can come from receiving recognition, praise, or rewards for their efforts. It helps to create a positive work environment where team members feel supported, respected, and empowered. This, in turn, leads to higher job satisfaction and lower turnover rates, as employees are more likely to stay with a company that values their contributions. Lastly, the people in my life play a significant role in getting me out of bed in the morning. Whether it be my family, friends, or colleagues, their support and encouragement inspire me to push through any challenges and strive for greatness. Knowing that I have a network of people who believe in me and are cheering me on gives me the strength and motivation to face each day with confidence and optimism.
