In 2020, Dragonfly Aerospace launched with a clear mission: to provide decision-makers with precise, easily accessible data. As Bryan Dean, Group CEO and Co-Founder, puts it: “Our goal is to use this technology to improve lives on Earth.” The company specialises in compact, high-performance imaging payloads (the part of the satellite responsible for collecting data or transmitting information), creating expansive imaging networks that offer constant views of Earth in various spectrums. This data provides critical business insights and helps improve lives globally. Based in Stellenbosch, Dragonfly Aerospace also contributes to space exploration, supporting NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration missions and lunar projects. Despite challenges, such as the lack of government-funded space initiatives, Dean believes South African space companies' resilience sets them apart. “The industry would definitely grow more with government projects and grants, which we have received practically zero of for a long time,” Dean notes. “But our resilience is our strength. Without government safety nets, we must be agile and competitive globally.” This agility, Dean adds, distinguishes South African space companies. “We fight hard for every bit of revenue,” he explains. “It has made us tough and agile. We might be one of the only truly commercial space industries in the world because we have no government support. It sounds negative, but it has made us stronger.” For more on Dragonfly’s journey, check out pages 12-13 in the latest edition of Wesgro’s Pioneers Magazine: https://lnkd.in/dfjwuHZF #SpaceTech #CommercialSpace #Innovation

WHO WILL BE THE NEW SPACE EXPLORERS OF THE FUTURE? Start here if you are reading via PC: https://lnkd.in/dh4D_Gqq Start here if you are reading via mobile: https://lnkd.in/dUYmNayU From the successful collaboration among the research group of the Advanced Design Unit of the Department of Architecture of the University of Bologna, the Department of Mathematics of the same university and Thales Alenia Space Italia, comes Beyond Human Life in Space, a research project within the Spoke 1- MICS - PNRR line 11. What will future users need in space? Will it be accessible for everyone? Can the well-being of future users be improved? Through a design-driven approach, our goal is to design a system that takes human factors into account during space exploration. Extensive research on sources, interviews and questionnaires has enabled us to imagine archetypes of possible users. Your support will be essential to enrich them with real needs, impressions and attributes. Read the cards of possible users and fill in the survey: your feedback will help us focus our research on more specific targets, identify needs and design valuable experiences and environments. Emerging market? Or already burgeoning arena that just most people can’t get their head around? Earth is a Planet - ‘Space’ is where our planet lives, orbiting with others. We need energy, minerals, light - for our own lifestyles to continue. Earth has finite resource… so fascinating to see how humans are now starting to harvest what we need from further afield. Earlier in the year, I was invited to get involved with looking at leadership and behaviours needed to not just survive, but thrive, in the space arena... including hopefully helping with some of the analogue astronaut training next year. As someone who thinks with a geospatial mind, and has worked with Satellite and space data nearly all of my career - this is home from home. Can’t wait 💫 Torsten Hoffmann - really looking forward to exploring the future of ‘Space’ tonight, and how we can support it 💫 Christina Korp , Nicole Stott , Mariscu Daniela , Joe Landon , Michelle Del Valle , Myles Harris #Leadership #FutureTech #Space #EmergingMarkets #Resilience #LeadershipTrust #EmpoweringSuccess

Sustainability, put simply, is human-centric and it’s our ability to utilize a resource in perpetuity. Our current and collective use of orbital space is unsustainable, not just for space but for Earth. You see, we lose the ability for Earth to be sustainable if we can’t use space because of the services, capabilities, and activities that space operations and exploration provides to us 🤷🏾♂️ it’s that critical! What’s required? A shift from short-term profit focused actions to long-term environmental planning and implementation. Pragmatically it means, inter alia, shifting from widescale and uncoordinated launches and operations of single-use space systems to globally coordinated and planned operations of reusable and recyclable space systems, along with environmentally sound practices of responsible (intentional) disposal (vs current practice of abandonment). Naysayers argue that economically we are incentivized to continue to saturate the skies with massive amounts of cheap and “disposable” space systems. I’ll point to plastic containers and bags that made it so easy for us and where that’s led … space is on that same path. What good is easy and cheap access to a space that you won’t be able to operate in or get planetary benefits from? Come and let’s have a candid conversation about it. See you there! Oh, if you’re committed to stewardship and would like to be empowered in making better decisions in what you do, let’s chat. GaiaVerse Ltd. is here for you to improve outcomes of your contributions in achieving sustainability writ large.

Mr. Eric Hauck, head of the Catalan government delegation for Southeast Europe, based in Croatia, received the president of the Adriatic Aerospace Association, Mr. Slobodan Bosanac, for a visit on April 18 on the topic of cooperation in the field of space. The Government of Catalonia launched the New Space Strategy program with the aim of establishing Catalonia as a center for innovation and attracting talent in the space economy. One of the leading projects within the Catalan NewSpace strategy is the installation and operation of a small satellite constellation. To date, three satellites have already been launched, with plans for a constellation of more than eight units by 2026. Furthermore, Catalonia is home to Catalonia SpacePort, located at Lleida-Alguaire Airport, which serves as a key hub for NewSpace activities . Our knowledge and R&D ecosystem in the NewSpace domain revolves around institutions such as the NanoSat Lab at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), the Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya (IEEC), the i2Cat Foundation and the Center Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC ).In the conversation about cooperation, mutual interest in the development of joint projects was expressed, bearing in mind the transfer of technology and science in both directions. Possibilities of involving I and other representatives of the Southeast Europe region were also considered.
