Does Green Tea Protect Against Cancer ? ..... — ..... Green Tea, and catechins in particular, are the new hope in cancer prevention. The only problem is that the studies are contradictory. Some show a reduction in cancer recurrence, others do not.  Animal studies have shown that the catechins in Green Tea, particularly EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate), help to prevent :  Breast cancer,  Prostate cancer,  Lung cancer,  Skin cancer.  This prevention is made possible because EGCG inhibits the carcinogenesis at every stage thanks to :  Antioxidative activity,  Anti-inflammatory activity,  Anti-proliferative activity,  Pro-apoptotic activity (helps cell death). Once cancer has been diagnosed, consumption of EGCG is thought to help reduce the development of metastases and tissue invasion. Can Cancer Be Contagious? \#cancer Though transmissible cancers are rare in humans, that s not the case for every species. A few animal cancers are easily transmissible, and one such example even posed an existential threat to its host species. Transmissible animal cancers include an aggressive form of facial tumor that s spreading among Tasmanian devils, which live on the Australian island they re named after. The cancer, called Devil Facial Tumor Disease, spreads through skin contact, and is frequently passed between males during violent skirmishes over mates. The cancerous lesions grow quickly and grotesquely, and typically kill the animals when they grow large enough to restrict breathing or eating. The cancer cells are thought to spread because Tasmanian devils lack genetic diversity, making it harder for their immune systems to tell cells from different animals apart. It results in cancer cells being able to survive and multiply undetected. As of 2023, DFTD had reduced Tasmanian Devil populations by 80 percent, prompting worries of extinction. Did you know that cancer research for pets can also benefit people? November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s not just about pets. Cancer affects 1 in 4 dogs and 1 in 5 cats. As many pet owners know, like in people, early detection is key. What many people don’t realize, however, is advances in pet cancer research have a huge translational potential and often inform human cancer treatments. Researchers across academia and industry are working in the field of comparative oncology, where naturally occurring cancers in pets are studied alongside human cancer. Dogs and cats develop cancers that are strikingly similar to ours, on a clinical, molecular, and genetic level, which makes them valuable models for research. In fact, treatments like immunotherapy and targeted therapies in pets have been pivotal in shaping novel approaches to human cancer care. For example, research into dog bone cancer (canine osteosarcoma) has directly influenced treatment options for human patients, where this aggressive cancer happens most often in teenagers and young adults. Immune cells are generally thought of as our defense companions, helping to eradicate infection from microbes such as bacteria or viruses. On the other hand, they might contribute to the growth of cancer cells in our bodies. Here, we have set up the experiment to observe this effect. Our study aimed to elucidate the immunosuppressive characteristics of bile duct cancer or Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) by investigating the role of culture supernatants from four selected CCA cell lines, representing two major types of CCA (intra and extrahepatic CCA), on the induction of M2-polarized macrophages. The specific signaling molecules and underlying mechanisms will also be investigated.

Why do some animals get it at a higher rate than others? This is the question at the heart of Peto's paradox, the observation that large animals, by virtue of their number of cells, are statistically more likely than smaller animals to develop and accumulate genetic mutations that lead to cancer, yet they don't. In fact, some large animals, including whales and elephants, get much less cancer than expected for an animal of its body size and number of cells.

Mark Mamula, PhD, developed a vaccine that can slow or halt certain cancers in dogs. And it could be used to treat humans in the future! 🐶 👏 Cancer in dogs is, unfortunately, very common, 1 in 4 will get it at some point. In 2016, Mamula’s team launched the first clinical trial of the vaccine in canines, and since then, it’s been administered to more than 300 dogs with three types of cancer. According to the research team, the vaccine increases the 12-month survival rates of dogs with certain cancers from about 35% to 60%. 8 May celebrates World Ovarian Cancer Day, a disease that affects thousands of women every year. Ovarian cancer is a silent disease, as it often has no signs or symptoms in its early stages. Genetics is a significant risk factor for ovarian cancer. Women with mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes have a much higher risk of ovarian cancer than women who do not have these mutations. There are genetic tests that can detect mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. These tests are recommended for women with a family history of ovarian or breast cancer, or for women with other risk factors for ovarian cancer. Early detection of ovarian cancer is key to treating the disease. It was a honor to have the opportunity to present our groundbreaking research at the Italian Society for Virology conference. During the presentation, I discussed the susceptibility of specific regions in the female reproductive system to infections and cancer, emphasizing the detrimental impact that multiple infections can have on the host genome. Notably, I highlighted the transformative use of preclinical patient-derived organoids in our approach to studying infection dynamics and cancer.
