Brandi Compliment, RN, loved working in the UK King’s Daughters emergency room, but wanted to try something new. She left in December 2023 to become a travel nurse, but quickly learned that it was not the right fit for her. “I missed the people I worked with,” Brandi said. “I was hesitant in the beginning, and knew within a month that I was ready to come back to King’s Daughters. What do love, money, and promises all have in common? 👇👇👇 I remember my stepfather many years ago (1970s) had a question from my Mom, just as he had rolled in from a very long road trip. She waited about 20 minutes but did remind him that he had promised her a dinner out (Saturday night). He was a Teamster and a dedicated long-haul truck driver. She was an RN-Charge Nurse Med-Surg floor. Both had good jobs, but they had been buckling down and budgeting to do some major renovations in our home. Rather than say to my mother, "this isn't in the budget", he mentioned that she was right and told her to be "ready to go" for 6PM. My mother told me that he went out, found one of his friends working a project, asked him if he needed "help". He dug a ditch for $50 so he could keep his promise to my mother. Many of us are being challenged for money but there is always a path to income. Life is a “project”. What “project” do you want to undertake for your income journey? When we talk about creating health, and community powered health, this is a small illustration of what it could look like. Re-connecting with all that public services can be, and perhaps even more, what citizenship is in our modern world....
I’ve always believed that public service/being a public servant is more than being employed and paid by a council/the NHS/police etc. I’ve personally spent time for example as a school governor, mentoring young offenders, care leavers and these experiences have been as important to individuals and communities as my paid employment as a public service leader. I observed a wonderful conversation today in my local library that exemplified this beautifully. A lady came in and was asking a member of library staff for some information on local activities and groups. ‘I don’t have too much going on in my life and I’d like to meet some new people but not sure how’. The member of staff proceeded to show her the local information section and asked her about her interests. She then went on to tell her about a local community group that she was part of (outside of her library work) that does everything from exercise sessions, to talks, to visits to the theatre. The lady lit up and said that sounded great. The staff member then said, ‘We are actually introducing and welcoming new members this week on Wednesday morning. Why don’t you come along and I’ll look out for you?’ The lady was delighted and said she would. The smile on her face was priceless. There was so much to this encounter. The power of social connection. The power of libraries in supporting wellbeing. A public servant knowing the local community, its assets and connecting other residents to them. A public servant willing to help her community outside of her paid job. Just brilliant.

I want to do more in this life… These were my thoughts driving home from work the other day. Don’t get me wrong, I am incredibly grateful for all of the experiences and impact I’ve made along the way in my nursing career. I often describe nursing “raised me” by teaching me so much about life lessons. Appreciate the simple things. Don’t take life for granted. Take risks and go for it. You will regret the things that you didn’t do more than the things you did do. Never judge or underestimate a person. Nursing also exposed me to so many different cultures and types of people. I am grateful for it all! I feel something deep inside that I want to do more. Make a bigger impact. Make a bigger difference. Reach more people. Finally have my existing experience and knowledge with matching credentials to level up. Reach my potential. Exceed my own expectations. Live a life more on my terms and aligned goals.
