Yet, that's essentially what's happening in our industry when people claim SiO2 content in silica fume doesn't matter for concrete quality. 🏰➡️📦 This misconception is like a termite in our foundations, slowly eating away at the quality of our structures. Let's crush this myth like we crush aggregate! Why SiO2 content is the superhero of silica fume: 1. It's the Batman of concrete - the higher the SiO2, the more it fights against weakness and permeability. 2. Think of it as the secret sauce in your grandma's legendary recipe - without enough, the concrete just won't have that extra oomph! 3. It's the bouncer at the concrete club - keeping out unwanted guests like chemical attacks and ASR. 4. Like a master Tetris player, high SiO2 content fills in all the tiny gaps, creating a denser, stronger structure. Ignoring SiO2 content is like: • Trying to win a marathon in flip-flops 🏃♂️🩴 • Expecting a smartphone to run on AA batteries 📱🔋 • Building a submarine with screen doors 🚢🚪 Let's not let this concrete catastrophe continue! We can achieve far more than we believe In the face of those so-called natural catastrophes, like fires or flooding, we often feel overwhelmed and helpless. But we oversee two important facts: a) how much we influence and bring those catastrophes into existence by building on wrong places, not properly taking care of the woods, and ignoring natural dynamics, as a few examples. b) how much we can do to get resilient simply by adapting to nature. In Pacific Palisades, a single building emerged intact after the severe fires of January 9, 2025. Didier Hope wrote an interesting piece about how passive house building principles allowed that house to survive. This demonstrates how much we can achieve if we use our creativity and tune into nature. Architecture and urban development will help us adapt to the changes we must face in the future.

This Grace Story details an underlying cost of improvement, the goring of an ox of once great importance that won't make it to the new world, and the human response to such events: Denialing. Grace: Denialing Denial remains the first stage of acceptance. "This process should be upsetting." The true purpose of that First Meeting wasn't satisfied until a second meeting took place. The concrete contractor, the lead player in this production, couldn't make the initial meeting, so we convened a supplemental session for those who couldn't make the first. Pablo, the concrete contractor, and his assistant Wilbur asked harder questions. The conversation began light-heartedly enough but quickly degraded into difficulties, which was precisely its purpose. We tend to start projects filled with promise. We neglect to recognize what must be sacrificed to achieve that promise, and it always comes as a profound surprise when the first hints of underlying costs surface. I began my contribution by suggesting we could support the roof from the top of the deck. I even took Pablo to the basement access panel to survey the underlying infrastructure. He seemed to become thoughtful as I sold my proposal. Once we returned to the front porch, to the top of the deck, Pablo asked the Golden Question.
