Shared a message of love and community on what it takes to address Domestic Violence at University of California, Berkeley. 🔑Prevention is key to unlocking care 🚪access is everything. ✨Domestic Violence has been a longstanding issue at UC Berkeley since the 90’s and DV cases occur at higher rates in the Family Housing at the University Village of Albany compared to the surrounding Berkeley community. ✨UniversityVillage of Albany is home to multigenerational communities of culture and tradition, international students and 1st gen students. ✨Families and residents are in a 3 hour line every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday for groceries that expire the next two days. These families are faces of resilience despite disinvestment. University of California, Berkeley - we know you can do better. You want to solve problems, we have answers. Let’s talk. 🌱we need restorative reinvestment. Make our community spaces ours again. 🌱We need livable wages. The Conservative Case for Public Education When we have an educated citizenry, we have a stronger workforce and a more robust economy.  When more of us can “pull ourselves up by our bootstraps,” all of us win.   Public schools also serve an important civic role.  They assure each and every child is prepared to engage in the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and help to Americanize immigrants.  By integrating both American-born students and immigrants from a range of backgrounds into one citizenry, we forge a stronger American identity. History of Public Education in the US Public education has been present on this continent since 1635 and by 1870 all states in our nation supported tax funded elementary schools.  At that time, the United States had one of the HIGHEST literacy rates in the world.  Public education was determined to be a foundational right as well as investment in our nation’s economic viability and essential to a democracy dependent upon the wisdom of its citizens.  JOHN MCCOLLISTER

A deliberate choice not to recruit equitably in-state is unconscionable, and if that’s correlated to a history of racial exclusion it’s much less than an excuse—it’s a compounding crime. OTOH, deciding how to balance resident and non-resident net tuition has fewer obvious, one-size-fits-all solutions, especially if those extra non-resident dollars are invested in forms that help the state residents or coffers. ‘Bama would have a moral access claim over UVA if (for example) it were meeting full need for its lowest-income students and UVA was instead using its in-state preference to subsidize a larger number of relatively affluent in-state residents.

The data in the report show that major gains for Blacks occurred in all Southern states after the Civil Rights Act was enforced. At its high point in the 1980s, 43% of Black Southern students attended majority white schools, up from 0% when Brown was decided in 1954. Now the percentage is down to 16%. Segregation today is highest in our nation’s big cities where Black and Latino students attend schools with an average of more than 80% nonwhite classmates. Major sectors of suburbia are changing fast and have serious segregation. Rural areas are less segregated. Over the last 30 years the proportion of schools that were intensely segregated (with zero to 10% whites) has nearly tripled, rising from 7.4% to 20%. These schools are now doubly segregated by race and poverty with an average of 78% poor students.
