Today is the second annual #DayOfTheHomeschooledChild. You likely know someone who is homeschooled. But they may not be open about it. Here’s why. For some homeschooled students, it is a time of having a flexible learning environment, curriculum that is tailored to our learning styles, and lots of individual attention from our parents. For other homeschooled students, it is a time of being neglected, ignored, and abused. Worse, over 200 children have lost their lives due to abuse in homeschooling environments. It doesn’t have to be this way. The Coalition for Responsible Home Education is working to protect homeschooled children. CRHE conducts research, advocates for evidence-based policy, and develops resources for the success of parents and children. We are wearing green today in support of homeschooled children. Green symbolizes youth, and the vibrant lives homeschooled children should be able to live. Children have rights. Parents have responsibilities. (And apologies: didn’t get my nails done this year. 💚)

The Colorado Sun has a great article on Keystone Policy Center report on the negative impact of 4-day school weeks on Colorado kids. Nearly 65% of Colorado school districts operate with only 4-day weeks, and not surprisingly, those students have worse outcomes than their peers who benefit from long-held standard of 5 days of school instruction. This is not a new issue. For the last 10 years, History Colorado has been offering solutions to this issue that also impacts working families and communities, who see an uptick in juvenile crime when shortening the school week. As a mom of three kids who attended 4-day schools, I created Hands-On History to address the missing fifth day of education. This high-quality and wildly accessible program has been filling the gap for a number of impacted Colorado kids and we are growing into more communities who need us. We can't solve Colorado's giant educational budget woes but we can meet families and young people where they are. https://lnkd.in/gaNyr8r9
