In order to truly understand and address the historical mistreatment of Black individuals in education, we need to dive into learning and taking action. From the era of segregated schools to the disproportionate disciplinary practices faced by Black students today, the impact of systemic racism persists. Taking action can start simply in your own sphere of influence. This might involve:  ✔️ initiating discussions about Black history and racial justice within classrooms, workplaces, or community spaces, ✔️ supporting Black-led educational initiatives, volunteering with organizations dedicated to educational equity, or ✔️ amplifying the voices of Black educators and activists But first, do YOUR WORK. The journey towards implementing Black history in education is multifaceted and ongoing. It requires a collective commitment to confronting uncomfortable truths, challenging entrenched systems of oppression, and advocating for transformative change. Last week, members of the EdVoice team attended the ACLU California Action, Black Parallel School Board, and BLACK ORGANIZING PROJECT INC event introducing their State of Black Education Report Card. The report card includes recommendations and community perspectives on how to close the opportunity gaps created by the legacy of slavery and colonization, structural racism and discrimination, continued school segregation and underfunding, and other factors. Today, the UWNYC Black History Month Spotlight features Dominique McNally, LMSW, Clinical Manager at Queens Community Justice Center . Dominique oversees the center’s Functional Family Therapy (FFT) program in partnership with our justice initiative, Atlas. FFT creates safer communities by strengthening bonds between justice-involved youth and their chosen families, helping to set young people on the road to a brighter future. How does Black history and your own lived experience inform your work at your organization? “When I think of Black Histor,y it brings me back to when my father had helped my brother with his school project and showed us a picture of our great grandfather with George Washington Carver. It was at that moment when I realized, “Wow, my family has a legacy.” That also reemphasized the ongoing struggle, that Black history is not just a phrase but a part of each of our family’s history. My own life experiences have heightened my understanding of the systemic issues that black families have faced throughout time. My experience understanding the depth of the mistrust, the context associated with the who, why, and the how within the justice system and other systems allowed me to take a different approach of rebuilding that same trust — while consistently striving to uplift individuals as well as families to broaden their perspective and or outlook.” In your efforts to create positive change in New York City’s communities of color, how has United Way of New York City supported your work? “United Way of New York City has afforded me greater opportunities to reach the broader community which I was born and raised in to provide continued support, providing further evidence through action to spark the mind of the next change agent to continue the work within our community.” #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistoryMonth2024 #SocialJustice

The Edwin Washington Project is an all-volunteer organization that, since 2016, has undertaken the task of sifting through and categorizing previously lost documents that detail the history of Loudoun County, VA's all-Black, rural schoolhouses between the end of the Civil War and desegregation in the 1970s. The story they have uncovered is one of Black resilience and determination—at odds with the prevailing narrative of the inadequacy of segregated Black education during Reconstruction and the Jim Crow era. Now, the story of Loudoun County's all-Black, rural schoolhouses is being told in Dirt Don't Burn by Edwin Washington Project CEO Larry Roeder and special editor Barry Harrelson. The book includes powerful stories of the largely unknown individuals and organizations that brought change to enduring habits of exclusion and prejudice toward African Americans. Black History is a constant happening. An everyday occurrence, and when history we made, we celebrate it. Why? Because to not celebrate our history is to accept the place we stand in it. As we continue to celebrate and honor those history makers, let us not only embrace the lessons of our past but also acknowledge the imperative need to learn from history, empower the present, and sculpt a future where equity and justice are intrinsic to every individual's existence. This is something we strive for at Urban League of Philadelphia beyond programming and community efforts. So Today we would like to highlight Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis who became the first Black Lt. Governor in the state of #pennsylvania in January of 2023. He also became the youngest person to serve in his position in the United States. Since then, Davis has vowed to sow hope and opportunity for the ignored, forgotten and to further advance the cause of social and economic justice for all, “especially Black and brown young people.” Whether it be advocating for after school programs, supporting minority-owned businesses, seeking to end gun violence, or speaking out for those unhoused, unprotected, and un-alived; Davis has been sure to keep his promise. Urban League works tirelessly each day to serve Greater Philadelphia, it is because of community partners and leaders like Lt. Gov Davis in the fight toward equity who help us get the job done and make history. This February, ATIXA (Association of Title IX Administrators), NABITA (National Association for Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment), and TNG Consulting want to spotlight the Black individuals in history who have advanced educational equity. The Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional, effectively dismantling the “separate-but-equal” doctrine established by Plessy v. Ferguson. We honor civil rights fighters Charles Hamilton Houston, who served as the first general counsel of the NAACP, and his mentee Thurgood Marshall, chief of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the first Black Supreme Court justice. Both figures were central to the establishment of this legal precedent. Meanwhile, we recognize that racial inequities persist across our U.S. public school system. “This fight for equality of educational opportunity (was) an isolated struggle,” Houston said. “All our struggles must tie in together and support one another… We must remain on the alert and push the struggle farther with all our might.” As we commemorate this critical milestone in the pursuit of educational equality, we remain committed to fostering an educational environment that champions inclusivity and equity for all.
