There's no need to reinvent the wheel when there's a solution that's already rolling. I recently spoke with a client who wanted to build their own wholesale platform to solve a common pain point in their business. They’re not alone — we’ve seen other companies take the same approach, only to create dozens of new problems unrelated to their business’s key function. So I advised the client against it. 🔗 Building vs. Buying Solutions 🔗 Today, the challenge lies with both the buyer and the seller. Let’s say a buyer receives multiple emails from sellers with 10 different Excel sheets to browse through their product assortments. If each seller opts to build their own B2B solution, they’re simply exchanging that pile of Excel sheets for 10 new software logins. Now, the buyer must juggle between those 10 tools instead of one familiar format. As they say a known devil is better than an unknown one 😈 This doesn’t solve the problem. It just makes the problem different. I’ve spoken with other distributors who invested heavily in building their own platforms but saw less than 10% of buyers actually use the platform to place orders. Eventually, their sales teams reverted to Excel, and further enhancements were too costly and they returned back to where they started. In wholesale, change is constant. A platform must handle dynamic changes, from product naming to order cancellations. Building a custom platform often lacks the flexibility needed for these real-time adjustments. Developers can build anything you ask them to, but the 'wholesale problem' is only solved once you have a network of buyers and sales teams using the same platform - i.e. speaking the same language. Think beyond the initial build to stay centered on what makes life easier for your buyers and teams, not just on optimizing costs or features. Think beyond what it takes to build a B2B platform, but what it takes to maintain it and enhance it, and whether those investments will really generate the ROI to make life easier for your buyers and sales teams in the long run.
