Volunteers can donate their time, brain scans or blood to research 🤲 ; indeed this is the bedrock of a lot of cutting-edge science. How about donating their social media data 🤳 ? My team routinely uses data donation, built on individuals' own data rights as defined in legalisation such as GDPR, to get access to information about how they use social media. Senior Research Associate in the Digital Mental Health Group, Dr Amanda M. Ferguson, PhD recently spoke to ai@cam about these efforts ➡️ now published in the blog post below. Further, Valerie Yap, a Research Assistant on our first major data donation study, has published more detailed reflections on how to build efficient and participatory systems to allow adolescents to donate their Instagram and TikTok Tok data. Data has the power to transform mental health science, but we need better tools to harness its potential. Wellcome's Mental Health Data Prize aims to address this gap. Aja Murray and her team at The University of Edinburgh are one of three winners of the prize. Their innovative digital tool uses counterfactual analysis to identify the most promising mental health intervention targets for young people based on existing data. The goal is to make these advanced statistical techniques more accessible to researchers - and unlock new insights in the process. New Policy Brief Published! 📱 Excessive social media use, over three hours daily, doubles the risk of anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges among teens, according to studies highlighted by Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. 📚 Key options include enhanced age verification and parental controls, mandatory mental health impact assessments for social media platforms, and integrating digital literacy and mental health education into school curriculums. 🔍 Murthy emphasizes the need for social media companies to share data on health impacts, undergo independent safety audits, and prioritize user well-being by redesigning harmful platform features like infinite scrolling.
