If you'd told me a couple of months ago if one of my weekly tasks running a tech startup would involve photographs of pints of Guinness, I think I would've looked at you like an idiot. However, the guys at Harker (particularly Tom Houghton-Alliss and Faizan Abbas) have made that the case. It's become a tradition that after our tech meetings (usually on a) Tuesday afternoon, we go for a drink at The Engineer ( a great pub off Arrad St, for those in Liverpool), and a Guinness quickly became everyone's go-to drink. We'd tend to play "The Guinness Game", always disagreeing on which rules we were meant to follow. Naturally, as a bunch of software engineers, we're a big fan of conventions, so, one evening, we decided this was something we needed to standardise. We'd just moved all our development documentation over to Notion (thanks to some free credits from Grantify UK), so we all got our laptops out and started working on a Git repo, and accompanying Wiki page, about how we all play the game going forwards, ensuring to include some context for those less acquainted with a Guinness. I'm very proud today to be sharing: ➡️ The Official Harker Guinness Repo: https://lnkd.in/eNWqhrE3 ➡️ Our Guinness Style Guide: https://lnkd.in/eVc2M-jz While this is a good laugh, it's also a great example of a couple of things: 1️⃣ A great, organic, opportunity to promote team-led company culture, and encourage the team to socialise out of work. 2️⃣ A brilliant example of what high-quality documentation should look like, in a very abstract context. It ended up being a great training exercise, and something we'll look to replicate in different settings in the future. I have a feeling the next round is going to be on me...

But in this unique story, Jonathon taught himself how to code by building a real-world business that made money, not a demo or experiment. See how he: ➡️ Used his new coding skills to achieve the freedom and flexibility he wanted ➡️ Sold the business on acquire.com for upper five figures ➡️ Used that as a foundation for future projects https://lnkd.in/evQaSXzp

Last week, the author of "What is Software Quality?" Ger Cloudt, posted a post about his passion next to Software Quality. A post about ballroom dancing because his son and daughter became Dutch Champions. (https://lnkd.in/eSR5A4MW)) To become a national Champion, in whatever sports, the athletes have to practice, practice and practice to become better and master the sport. The same applies to programmers as well, practice makes them better. #quality #software #whatissoftwarequality #practice #sport
