One of the biggest challenges the construction industry faces to productivity is overcoming the limitations of construction sites. These include everything from local restrictions and accessibility issues to bad weather spells to the shortage of skilled labour onsite. When combined with the increasingly stringent performance criteria buildings must meet, this can be a real challenge for contractors. However, products and systems which have been precisely manufactured to tight tolerances can help to provide greater speed, predictability, and accuracy. Portable overpass bridges: A revolutionary solution for safer, more efficient road construction, allowing uninterrupted work while keeping traffic flowing securely overhead. Swiss engineers have addressed safety concerns in road construction by utilizing portable overpass bridges. These innovative structures can be easily transported and assembled at any project site, providing a temporary roadway for vehicles while construction continues underneath. This solution significantly reduces the risk of accidents and injuries for both workers and motorists. By diverting traffic above the work zone, these bridges prevent potential hazards such as vehicle collisions with construction equipment or workers, and minimize traffic congestion. Unsafe situations in road construction often involve close proximity between workers and moving vehicles, leading to high-risk scenarios. Portable overpass bridges effectively mitigate these dangers, ensuring a safer work environment and uninterrupted project progress. This approach exemplifies a proactive measure in construction safety, combining engineering ingenuity with practical application. #roadconstruction #engineering #technology #chemicalengineering #roads #civilengineering #construction #civilconstruction #engenharia #engenhariacivil

SMP Alliance continues to deliver the National Emergency Area Retrofit (NEAR) programme for National Highways. Hundreds of Alliance and supplier colleagues are working at pace to add 150 more dedicated places to stop on all lane running (ALR) motorways by the end of March this year. Their work extends beyond constructing the actual emergency areas themselves, as the teams are also installing a range of supporting items, including fixed and digital signs, stopped vehicle detection (SVD) technology and CCTV. A great example of these collaborative works is the installation of a 3,800kg gantry and 9,000kg cantilever for a new digital sign that stands at 8m high. The time lapse video below provides a flavour of the efforts involved to erect the new gantry at its location close to J30 on the M1 J28-30 scheme in Derbyshire. The task was undertaken at night to minimise disruption for road users. Overseen by the NEAR North team (which is led by Alliance on-site assembly partner Costain Group PLC), piling and groundwork supplier Van Elle completed the piling and foundation works for the structure before Adey Steel Group supplied the gantry, which was safely manoeuvred into position by experienced lifting specialists MJ Hughes Construction. Further support was provided by construction management and lifting consultants Machin & son Ltd, with Mway Comms carrying out the cabling and installation of the sign face.
