In our 3rd meeting at ARCC we discussed the difference between being non-racist vs being anti-racist. We discussed these terms in relation to MLK’s Letter from Birmingham Jail. The conversations we had were very impactful, so I thought I’d share what I took from it. To be a non-racist is to be someone who doesn’t participate in racism but is also the person who doesn’t stand up against it, or those who are victims of it. To be an anti-racist is to be someone that is a part of the conversation, fighting against the hate in many ways. Whether that fight may be with family and friends, during protests, etc. To be a non-racist is to be parallel to the White moderate described in the Letter from Birmingham Jail. DON'T be a White moderate. BE an anti-racist. I recommend reading MLK’s Letter from Birmingham Jail: https://lnkd.in/esi9scnR. I also suggest joining ARCC and looking through ARCC’s content on the website. I suggest following ARCC on Instagram, subscribing on YouTube, and listening to the podcast on your favorite streaming platform. https://lnkd.in/eHzn4JdT

We need peace! How to end violence and destruction? First we need a permanent ceasefire. What must occur then is that both current extremes (the expansive Zionists settlers and the people who want to eradicate Israel) must be put aside. This happens when the silent majority on both sides becomes vocal and through non-violent resistance will say enough is enough. A majority has, in the calmer periods, always been in favor of a peaceful solution. This grassroots movement then needs to grow by democratic support, attention and visibility. So what is the key? Both sides suffer dearly and live in fear of each other. The answer is not to split people in a two-state bordered solution and to keep the hatred alive, but instead, it is to make sure that there is (non-violent) interaction established on the basis of freedom and equality between the two groups. The result is that people will grow together by mutual understanding and develop empathy for each other, leading to trust. Only this path leads to sustainable peace. www.pax.ngo www.convergence.ngo https://lnkd.in/dGQppgN8

Although my book focused on the dangers of right-wing extremism and the gateway drug of fundamentalism, I wanted to take a moment today and post about left-wing extremism and the economy of outrage that exists between extremists. Specifically, I became aware today that one of the many "Animal Liberation" organizations has a 24-hour "action plan" for tomorrow, which hopefully is just peaceful protesting but will likely be inflammatory as per their history. They anticipate counter-protests and seem prepared, so if you have college-age kids, you might check in with them and have "the talk" about not being a tool. This conversation doesn't have to be confrontational; acknowledging that kids will be kids is vital for de-escalation and productive communication. You don't have to tell them not to have opinions, keep them quiet, or never attend a protest, but make them aware that other agendas exist.

On International Day of Remembrance of Victims of Slavery, we are remembering the millions of men, women and children who were brutalized in slavery through the transatlantic slave trade. This is not just a reminder to #RememberSlavery and its legacy of racism and prejudice that lives on today, but a call to action. The transatlantic slave trade would not have come to an end without the powerful activism of people who were themselves enslaved. They bravely shared their first-hand experiences, built awareness and mobilised community action bringing an end the horrors of historical slavery. Today, we need to do more to create the space to empower survivor leaders who know better than anyone that we need change. The Freedom United community is actively demanding a global society where modern slavery no longer thrives and where survivors are empowered to lead. You can do two things today to join the fight against modern slavery and help build a movement that is led by survivors and informed by lived experience. 🖋️ Take action by signing the My Story, My Dignity Pledge and commit to represent modern slavery and survivors’ experiences with dignity: https://lnkd.in/dXY-BG9 💬Tell us if you think enough is being done to #RememberSlavery and victims of the transatlantic slave trade? Would you like to see more memorials? And do memorials go far enough? 🤔 Share your thoughts in the comments & how slavery is remembered wherever you are in the world 👇

In my previous post, I shared a video of Rashida Tlaib’s speech that was given before the Chair which preceded her being censured. This video picks up from that post in analyzing various nuances and the complexities involved especially in this time period where there is a movement away from free speech. In some cases, not all speech is equal and in fact some speech can be harmful whether it is hate speech or speech used as a means of cyberbullying or harassment or to defame someone’s character which is against the law. Cancel culture or censorship can be well-intended as a means of providing psychological safety while preventing against hate speech or discrimination against various individuals and groups of people based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, immigrant status, national identity or any other identifying factor. However, when censoring or cancelling is used as a means of silencing protest, dissent, or simply a differing viewpoint or perspective containing some form of criticism, this is often indicative of a power imbalance or differential and in that context, it is not representative of diversity, equity, or inclusion. More importantly, when voices are suppressed it creates a climate of fear and lack of cognitive and affective empathy.
