🌍 Waste is a Design Flaw 🛠️ On November 6th, I had the amazing opportunity to attend the Design for Planet Festival 2024 by the Design Council. This wasn’t just another online event—it was a brilliantly designed experience that left a lasting impact on how I view the role of design in sustainability. ✨💻 The key message? 'Waste is a design flaw' - Sophie Thomas. ♻️ Every design decision impacts our planet. 🌏 In fact, 80% of a product’s environmental impact and cost is determined during the design phase! As designers, engineers, and innovators, we have the responsibility to rethink, redesign, and redefine what waste means in our processes and products. 🔄 From Patrick Grant’s inspiring keynote on regenerative design 👕 to the engaging Design Debate: Products vs. Business Models? 🤔⚡, the festival showcased transformative ideas about circular design, business innovation, and sustainable impact. This insightful article sums up the festival's core ideas beautifully: 'Waste is a Design Flaw' - Reflections on the Design for Planet Festival 2024 [https://lnkd.in/grAJRaVQ] by Pete Swift, Co-Founder of Planit. The festival reinforced my commitment to exploring Circular Design principles—like Design for Disassembly 🔧 and Self-Repair 🛠️—and applying them to Product Design and Sustainable Mobility. 🌱⚙️ 📚 Check out the article linked above and share your thoughts on waste in design? 👉 How can we, as designers and engineers, tackle this challenge? #CircularDesign #DesignForPlanet #Sustainability #ProductDesign #GreenJobs #WasteNotWantNot #InnovationForGood #Design

In the world of trends and the next big thing, what role does sustainability play in design? We asked our #DesignCollective community member Shashank Nimkar his thoughts on creating timeless design. "Trends are like waves that hit the shores every hour and disappear but sustainability is like the ocean that stays deep for generations, connecting the world. Something that is designed mindfully to cater any respective needs of an individual or society at large will always find the user base in every era. Design driven by sustainability addresses concerns at each stage, from raw material procurement to manufacturing, packaging to end-of-life processing or application. We may find limited options or variety among the sustainably designed solutions, perhaps because there are a few ways that enable human-nature synergy, everything else is an abuse for human convenience. I try to work with first principles, deriving inspirational analogies from materials or systems in nature to design universal materials or incorporating design for - durability, dismantling, repair, recycling, repurpose and collaboration. When we have a purpose to design for an impact, trends don’t matter." Shashank is the founder and CEO of Earth Tatva – Recycled Ceramics and is a multi-award winning designer who practices circular design through industrial design, animation and policy framing. He is recognized as a circular economy pioneer by Ellen MacArthur Foundation and has been felicitated with prestigious awards at Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival and James Dyson Award, among others. He is highly passionate about materials, their application and how they can be kept in use to accelerate circular economy. #design #sustainability #sustainabledesign #designtrends

#Design Disappointment: Baltic Design Struggles (Meh 😒) & Why Danish Design Thrives Being a designer from the Baltics, I’ve always admired what’s happening just across the water in Denmark. The solutions they are developing? Next-level. And it makes me wonder why so few Baltic designers applied to the Baltic Sustainability Awards. It’s honestly a shame. For instance, look at some of the innovations: 1. ALGIECEL - Turning industrial CO2 into high-value ingredients for food and cosmetics. This is not just good; it’s groundbreaking, showing how waste can be a business opportunity. 2. Reeftile - Biobased bricks for harbor biodiversity, mimicking coral and ocean life to improve marine ecosystems. It’s like bringing life back to human-made structures. 3. Gopad - A 100% biodegradable menstrual pad that disappears into the earth without leaving toxins or microplastics. I mean, this is the future we should all be working towards. And then there’s Vireo—turning hemp into a bio-based alternative to leather. Why aren’t more Baltic companies leading the charge in circular economy solutions like this? It’s frustrating to see the lack of participation when we have the talent, the ideas, and the need. As I reflect on these projects, I’m struck by the variety and depth of the solutions. They’re not just tackling sustainability on a surface level—they’re integrating it deeply into their design processes. It’s a reminder that, in the Baltics, we need to rise to this level of ambition. It’s not just about throwing a recycling symbol on your next product—it's about challenging the very way we think about design and impact. What kills me is seeing how few designers from the Baltics have even applied to the Baltic Sustainability Awards. Seriously, what’s the holdup? Are we just too comfortable with mediocrity? Or worse, are we so focused on aesthetics that we miss the bigger picture? So, my message to designers in the Baltics—let’s stop watching from the sidelines. Let’s step up, showcase what we can do, and prove that we can innovate with the best of them. Let’s make sure we’re in that conversation next year.

It's shocking to see you still ignoring this. You know how you keep using synthetic materials everywhere? Well then it's time to wake up to biophilic design. Yup, sustainable isn't just a buzzword anymore. → Natural Materials Imagine specifying materials that actually heal spaces. Not just look pretty in photos. → Local Sourcing Think of it as investing in your community. Lower carbon footprint, higher client satisfaction, better stories to tell. Mass-produced items? Still functional sometimes. But they're not the future of design. Your materials don't need to cross oceans. Research. Connect locally. Sustainable design isn't about being trendy. It's about securing our future. The future belongs to conscious designers. P.S.: What's your favorite sustainable material?
