🔬 Inspiration in Science: A Talk with Professor Graham Williams 🌟 Our second-year BTEC Applied Science students recently had the incredible opportunity to hear from Professor Graham Williams of the University of Hull. 🎓 Prof. Williams, who himself studied BTECs, shared his inspiring journey and highlighted the importance of aiming high—reminding students that with dedication, they could one day be in roles like Chief Scientific Officer! 💡 During the talk, Prof. Williams gave valuable advice on the transferable skills that both universities and employers look for, and how these can be developed through their studies. He also linked the skills directly to their Unit 6 Research Project, showing how research is essential to scientific careers and the wider job market. 🔍 This session was a powerful reminder of the endless opportunities that science can offer, and we hope it has motivated our students to continue pushing the boundaries of their potential. 🚀

Daily trivia 33: Our PhD students can customize their learning experience by developing a "learning contract" that specifies courses and research topics they will study. This allows for flexibility for interdisciplinary programs like our Systems Science. https://lnkd.in/dYEJr8CM

According to US News, Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the best graduate schools in America. I agree 😊 . Check out new top rankings in engineering: #5 overall, #1 in biomedical and industrial, and top 10 across the board. But also business, science, computing, social sciences... whatever you want to study, we have you covered!!! (As always, please note that rankings are very rough metrics of quality, based on varying criteria as defined by specific media groups... before choosing where to go to school, you need to do your own research and decide based on your own criteria!) https://lnkd.in/evDsQ77J

Some of the key findings from the report which led to this article: 🌟 International PGR students make significant contributions to the UK’s research strength across the globe. There is widespread consensus within the sector that international PGR students are delivering positive outcomes for universities as teachers, researchers, collaborators, and advocates for the UK higher education system. ❌ There is no evidence that international PGR students are displacing home PGR students. ➡ The lack of any deliberate government strategies to attract, retain, and maximise the benefits of international PGR students is a missed opportunity to enhance the UK’s research base, given the benefits these students bring. There is opportunity here for the government, as James Coe and Jess Lister allude to in their article... "The new government is looking around for ways to grow the economy, reset the UK’s position in the world, and better align universities with their missions for the economy. Starting with the attraction, retention, and impact of international PGR students could make an immediate difference to education and the country."
New on Wonkhe: The contributions of international postgraduate research students can be seen throughout the UK’s research ecosystem. James Coe and Jess Lister make the case for some joined-up thinking https://lnkd.in/e-nwPcSq

In this week’s UK House of Lords Science and Technology Committee evidence hearing, RSB Fellows Professor Paul Freemont and Professor Susan Rosser provided expert testimony on the future of engineering biology in the UK. Their discussions highlighted: 🛠️ The need to improve training by investing in doctoral training centres and apprenticeships, to support the next generation of talent in engineering biology. 💼 The importance of long-term public-private investment to allow scale-up, de-risk these technologies for investors, and maintain talent. 🌱 The strength of the massive breadth of engineering biology in the UK, allowing the field to address diverse issues from medical technology to climate change and the need for sustainable alternatives. The full session is available to watch via Parliament Live TV here: https://buff.ly/4aXUuGa RSB supports the engineering biology sector through various initiatives. We accredit degree programmes to raise higher education standards in the biosciences, and support the employability of scientists through our Industry Skills Certificate, which includes training in AI, machine learning, and core business skills. RSB's Evolving 5-19 Biology sets out recommendations and a framework to support excellent teaching and learning of biology and the ability to make informed choices about working in the biosciences. Additionally, we influence policy and regulation to enable ethical biological innovation through evidence-informed dialogue, knowledge exchange and collaboration across stakeholder communities. #EngineeringBiology #SciencePolicy

The current eccentric processes for selecting PhD places.a comment I made worth making more visible as a contribution to this strange system Fascinating and unnerving. All the PhD students I have taken on-and got through- were without any recompense or support to me as the supervisor: the university got the whole process for free… but when in turn I wanted to do one literally no regard of any kind was given fir this very substantial gift! Nor to the proven judgment on taking one on when it was my turn! It’s probably time to name a name or two…. Monash is one such oblivious and entitled university (plus a decade of totally free honorary senior fellowship in a different subject with some great outcomes) To add another sad aspect I had been asked to submit one of my major series of transport contributions for a PhD in engineering by publication… but as the modern playbook dictates when I got round to find the time (after 17 years of giving the unique capstone unit in transport policy) to put it all together, needless to say “oh no we have changed the regulations and you can’t do it now” None of this means that any other possible student might lose a place by letting me do one! And after three quite different discipline Masters there! All the PhD students I’ve taken on either asked me from the start or requested my help when wondering if they could really do one..
